Skirt around the eastern side of the palace and begin to climb, following the road as it rises toward a fortress silhouetted against the sky.

Forte di Belvedere

The Forte di Belvedere crowns the first ridge of the hill, a star-shaped fortress built to guard the city and the ruling family, and even from its walls the views begin to open magnificently. As you climb the road toward it, pause and turn back, and you will see the great dome of the cathedral floating above the rooftops across the river, closer and lower than you expect from up here. The fortress itself is a broad grassy platform ringed by sloping stone ramparts, often hosting open-air art installations against the backdrop of the skyline. The air feels fresher up here, with cypress trees and garden walls lining the lanes. Take in the widening view over the domes and towers.
