Lisbon Alfama Walking Tour: A Self-Guided Route Through the Old Town to the Castle

Alfama is the oldest quarter of Lisbon, a tangle of steep lanes and tiled houses that tumble down the hillside toward the river, and it is a neighborhood made to be discovered on foot and by ear, with fado drifting from open doorways. If you are planning a walking tour in Portugal, this Lisbon self guided walking tour climbs from the great fortress cathedral up through the maze of the old town to the castle on the summit, pausing at tiled terraces with views over the rooftops and the wide silver river. It is a walk of gentle labor and constant reward, every climb answered by another viewpoint.

Before you set off, prepare for hills and cobbles. This walk is only about four kilometers, but Alfama is built on a steep slope and paved in the small, polished stones that make Lisbon so beautiful and so slippery, so wear shoes with real grip, especially if it has rained. The climb is steady rather than brutal, and there are viewpoints to rest at along the way. Late afternoon is ideal, cooler for the climb and glowing for the views, and the evening brings the sound of fado to the lanes. If you are listening as you go, watch your footing on the smooth stones, keep an eye out for the little yellow trams that squeeze through the narrow streets, and pause at every terrace to let the view and your breath catch up.

Lisbon Cathedral

You begin at Lisbon Cathedral, known simply as the Se, a stern and ancient church that looks more like a fortress than a place of worship, with two blocky bell towers and battlements along the top. It is the oldest church in the city, begun not long after Lisbon was taken back from Moorish rule, and its heavy Romanesque walls have survived earthquakes that flattened much of the city around it. Stand across the narrow street to take in the rose window between the twin towers, then watch as one of the famous yellow trams rattles past directly in front of the facade, a scene photographed a thousand times a day. The building feels solid and defensive, rooted in the very beginnings of the city. When you are ready, begin the climb, following the tram tracks and the rising cobbled street as it curves upward through the old quarter toward the first great viewpoint.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is one of the most romantic terraces in Lisbon, a tiled balcony draped in flowering bougainvillea that opens suddenly onto a sweeping view over Alfama and the river. As you arrive, the cramped street gives way to an airy terrace, and below you the red rooftops of the old town cascade down the hill toward the shining water, dotted with the white domes of churches. The terrace walls are covered in beautiful blue and white ceramic tiles depicting scenes from the city's history, and a pergola dripping with purple flowers frames the whole view. There is often a busker with a guitar here, adding a soundtrack to the panorama. Take your time along the railing, picking out the ships on the river and the two great churches on the ridge to your left. Then step through to the wide open square just beyond, which offers an even broader view.

Portas do Sol

Portas do Sol, the Gates of the Sun, is a broad terrace and square that gets its name from an old city gate that once stood here facing the sunrise, and the view from it is one of the widest in the whole city. Walk to the edge and the whole of Alfama pours down the slope beneath you to the river, a jumble of terracotta roofs, whitewashed walls and the twin white towers of a monastery rising above them on the far ridge. A statue of the city's patron saint stands watch over the scene, holding a model of a ship. Cafe tables spread across the square, a fine place to pause with a coffee and let the panorama sink in. This is the balcony of Alfama, the classic postcard of Lisbon. When you have taken it in, turn away from the view and follow the road as it continues its climb, winding up toward the walls and towers of the castle crowning the hilltop above.

Sao Jorge Castle

Lisbon yellow tram Alfama

Sao Jorge Castle sits at the very top of the hill, a rambling Moorish fortress whose towers and ramparts have guarded the city for over a thousand years, and simply reaching its walls on foot is a triumph. Even from the approach and the gardens around the entrance, the position is commanding, the highest point of the old city with the ground falling away on every side. Peacocks strut through the pine and olive trees outside the walls, their cries carrying across the hilltop. From the terraces here, the view stretches over the entire center of Lisbon, across the great square by the river to the long suspension bridge in the distance. Cannons line the outer walls, pointing out over the city they once defended. Stand among the ancient stones and take in how the whole city arranges itself below the castle. Then begin to descend on the eastern side, plunging back down into the narrowest and most atmospheric lanes of the quarter.

Alfama Lanes

The Alfama Lanes are the real heart of the neighborhood, a labyrinth of streets so narrow and steep that no map can really hold them, where the city feels centuries old and intensely alive. As you wind downhill, the lanes twist and fork, sometimes barely wide enough for two people, lined with tiled houses whose balconies drip with laundry and potted flowers. Cats doze on doorsteps, the smell of grilled sardines drifts from tiny restaurants, and from somewhere unseen a fado singer's voice rises and falls, mournful and beautiful. Do not worry about getting lost here, because getting lost is the point, and every wrong turn reveals a tiled shrine, a hidden staircase, or a grandmother watching the street from her window. Let the lanes carry you gently downhill and sideways across the slope. Aim generally to keep the height you can, and drift toward the northeast, where the streets eventually deliver you back to a familiar square near where you climbed.

Largo das Portas do Sol

Sao Jorge Castle Lisbon

Largo das Portas do Sol is the small square beside the great terrace you visited earlier, and returning to it now, after losing yourself in the lanes, ties the walk together and lets you catch your breath before the final stretch. The square is a busy little crossroads of the old town, where trams pause, tuk-tuks gather, and visitors regroup with maps and ice creams. From the corner you can glance back down over the rooftops one more time, the view a little more familiar now that you have walked its streets. There is a pleasant bustle here, the sound of tram bells and chatter, and often a musician playing nearby. It is a good place to sit for a moment on a step or a bench. When you are rested, leave the square heading northeast and downhill, following the streets as they lead you along the ridge toward a broad open square with a great white dome rising beyond it.

Campo de Santa Clara

Campo de Santa Clara is a spacious, tree-lined square on the northeastern edge of Alfama, a calmer and more local corner that feels a world away from the tourist crush higher up. Twice a week the square hosts the famous flea market, when it fills with stalls selling antiques, old records, secondhand books and every kind of curiosity, and locals haggle over the tables. On other days it is a peaceful place of benches and shade beneath the trees, with grand old buildings looking on. Above the square rises the huge white dome of the pantheon, drawing your eye onward. This is a lovely spot to slow down and feel the ordinary life of the neighborhood. Walk across the square, enjoying the openness after the tight lanes, and continue toward that gleaming dome, the final landmark of the walk, which grows more impressive with every step you take toward it.

National Pantheon

Miradouro Santa Luzia Lisbon

You finish at the National Pantheon, a magnificent white domed church that took so many centuries to complete it became a local byword for a job that never ends. Its vast rounded dome and pale marble facade dominate this corner of the city, visible from far across the river. Step into the wide space in front of it and look up at the sheer scale of the dome, one of the largest in the country. Inside rest the tombs of Portuguese presidents, writers and national heroes, including a beloved fado singer, and a terrace near the top offers yet another panorama over Alfama and the water, if you wish to climb it. Standing at the base, you are at the far end of the old town, having crossed it entirely from the cathedral to here. Find a place to sit in the shadow of the great dome and let the walk settle, high above the river you have looked out over all afternoon.

Why Alfama Belongs to Walkers

Reaching the pantheon, you have climbed through the whole living history of Lisbon, from the fortress cathedral at the bottom to the Moorish castle at the top and down again through lanes that have not changed their shape in centuries. Alfama is a place that simply cannot be understood any other way than on foot, because its steep, tangled streets defeat every vehicle and every map, revealing themselves only to people willing to climb and wander. Walking it, you feel the neighborhood in your legs and hear it in the fado drifting from its doorways, and you notice the tiny things, a tiled saint, a cat in the sun, a view snatched between two houses. It is a district that rewards the slow and the curious. If you would like a companion for the next climb, open the Walk With Me map to find other walkers out exploring the city right now.
