The Cathedral and Rhine Walk starts beneath the cathedral's twin spires, which held the record for tallest building in the world when they were finished in 1880, and drops into the Altstadt past Great St. Martin and the Historic Town Hall, 2.1 kilometers, about 29 minutes in all.
It finishes at the Gürzenich, the medieval hall built for emperors and carnival, and the Chocolate Museum on the Rhine, whose glass building juts into the river like the bow of a ship.
The Romanesque Churches Walk covers different ground, 3.2 kilometers, about 45 minutes, linking St. Kunibert, the bone-lined Basilica of St. Ursula, the domed St. Gereon, a surviving tower of the Roman city wall and the Basilica of the Holy Apostles, ending at a museum of medieval art inside the old church of St. Cecilia.
Néhány megálló, amely mellett elhaladsz majd, és amiért érdemes lesz lelassítanod.

This is the view every traveler arriving by train sees first, the cathedral's twin spires floodlit against the dark sky, with the iron arches of the Hohenzollern Bridge carrying trains and pedestrians across the Rhine just beside it. The bridge's railings are famously covered in thousands of padlocks left by couples, glinting under the lights at night. The cathedral itself took 632 years to finish, its foundation stone laid in 1248 and its spires completed only in 1880, briefly making it the tallest building in the world. Boats still pass beneath the bridge after dark, their lights streaking the water below.

Great St. Martin's square crossing tower, with four slender turrets at its corners, anchored the riverside skyline for centuries before the cathedral's spires were finished, and it was the landmark every boatman on the Rhine looked for. The church was built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as part of a Benedictine abbey, on ground that was once a Roman river island. Like most of the old city it was shattered in the Second World War, and rebuilding took until the 1980s. A modern radio tower now shares the skyline behind it, an odd but honest pairing of medieval and modern Cologne.

Below Great St. Martin's tower, narrow lanes open onto rows of brightly painted houses that once belonged to Cologne's old fish market, leaning shoulder to shoulder along the riverside. This is the heart of the city's brewhouse culture, where traditional Kölsch halls serve the local beer in small, slim glasses, with a waiter called a Köbes bringing a fresh one the moment yours runs dry, unless you cover your glass with a beer mat. The streets here are some of the oldest in the city, rebuilt after the war but following their medieval layout almost exactly, a good place to stop for a beer and watch the old town go by.

This row of narrow, brightly painted gabled houses is one of the most photographed corners of Cologne's Altstadt, each facade a different pastel shade, with the cathedral's stonework just visible at the edge of the frame. Houses like these once belonged to merchants and tradespeople working close to the river, and though most were rebuilt after wartime bombing, they follow the same narrow medieval plots their predecessors stood on. The contrast between the painted houses and the cathedral's dark Gothic mass behind them makes this stretch memorable to walk through, a quieter, more colorful Cologne than the cathedral square a few minutes away.

Seen at golden hour from across the city, Cologne Cathedral's twin spires rise above a haze of rooftops, cranes and the glass canopy of the main train station just beside it, the whole skyline softened by low sunlight. The cathedral is often called the most visited landmark in Germany, and from this angle you can see why it dominates every view of the city for miles around. The station's position right beside the cathedral is no accident, since train travelers were meant to step out and see the spires immediately. It's a view that captures both the old city and the busy modern one it has grown up around.
