Mire számíthatsz egy Rothenburg ob der Tauber audió gyalogos túrán?

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the rare medieval town still sealed inside its own walls, and an audio walk here moves from the castle spur where the town began down into the green river valley below it, then back up along the covered wall walk to the market square at its heart.

The Tauber Valley Walk starts at the Markus Tower, a survivor of the town's very first wall, follows the grand Herrngasse past the German Christmas Museum and the oldest church in town to the Castle Gate, then opens onto the Castle Garden on the rocky spur where Rothenburg began around 1142. From there it drops through the Kobolzell Gate down a steep lane into the valley, ending at the Double Bridge with the walled town rising above you. It covers 1.7 kilometers, about 23 minutes of walking, across 7 stops.

The Walls and Market Walk starts at the Spital Bastion, the most powerful fortification the town ever built, passes the Plönlein, the forked corner with its yellow half-timbered house that is one of the most photographed views in Germany, then follows the town walls and gates of the east and north, partly along the covered wall walk itself. It covers 2.7 kilometers, about 38 minutes of walking, across 9 stops.

From the walls the route turns in to St. James's Church, home to Tilman Riemenschneider's Holy Blood Altar, then to the Market Square, where figures act out the Meistertrunk legend on the Town Hall's clock, and ends at the Medieval Crime Museum. Both routes are mostly level but cobbled throughout, and the Tauber Valley Walk ends with a climb back up from the river, so comfortable shoes matter more than stamina on either one.

The Plonlein, a forked street corner with a yellow half-timbered house in Rothenburg

The Plönlein

This sloping corner, with a tall half-timbered house painted yellow standing at a fork in the road, is the Plönlein, probably the most photographed view in Rothenburg. The town looks this way because the war years left it too poor to tear down and rebuild, so the half-timbered houses that went up after the fire of 1501 and the earthquake of 1356 have simply stayed standing since. The street climbing left leads through a tower gate built in 1385, while the lane dropping right heads toward a second tower and the river valley below. Look up at the gables for a beam with a hook, once used to haul grain into the attic for storage.

A stone town gate with a conical roof in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

A Town Gate

This stone gateway with its conical tiled roof is one of Rothenburg's town gates, built to take no chances with anyone trying to force their way through. Look up above the archway for a carved stone face with an open mouth, a so-called pitch nose, through which defenders could pour boiling pitch or hot water on attackers below. Set into the big wooden gate leaves is a tiny door, small enough that an adult has to stoop, called the eye of the needle, which let a late traveler in one at a time after the town gates were shut and barred for the night. Pass through and the Castle Garden or the valley road opens up just beyond.

The covered wall walk along Rothenburg's town walls

The Town Walls

Rothenburg is one of the few towns in Germany that still sits entirely inside its medieval walls, and this covered gallery along the top is the way to see them properly. Walk the wall walk and you pass stone plaques set into the stones, naming the people, families and groups from around the world who donated money to rebuild the walls after they were damaged in an air raid in the last weeks of the Second World War. The walkway is narrow in places and the railing on the town side is low, so mind your step and your head under the beams, but the reward is looking down over gardens and rooftops exactly as the town's defenders once did.

Rothenburg's walled old town on its wooded spur above the Tauber valley

The Castle Garden

This wooded spur above the Tauber valley is the spot where Rothenburg began. Around 1142, Conrad III, the first king of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, built a castle here, and the town grew up behind it on the plateau beyond. A great earthquake in 1356 brought the castle down, leaving only the little chapel of St. Blaise, which still stands at the garden's edge today as a memorial to the dead of the world wars. From the tip of the spur you look down over the river winding through meadows and woods, with the walled town's towers rising against the sky behind you, a view painters have been drawn to for two centuries.

The Gothic tower and Renaissance wing of Rothenburg's Town Hall on the Marktplatz

Market Square

The Marktplatz is the heart of Rothenburg, with the Town Hall's Gothic tower rising over one side and the clock of the old Councillors' Tavern looking down on the square. Several times a day small windows beside the clock open and two figures act out the Meistertrunk, the legend of a mayor who supposedly saved the town in 1631 by draining more than three liters of wine in one go to satisfy an occupying general. Historians doubt the story happened quite that way, but the general really did take the town that year, and the poverty that followed is why so many of the colorful houses around the square have never been torn down.
