Co vás čeká na pěší trase s audioprůvodcem v Tallinn

A Tallinn audio walk climbs from the medieval lower town's cobbled lanes and guild passages up onto Toompea hill, timing each stop so you catch St. Olaf's spire, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the fairytale rooftop views without checking a map every few steps.

The walk begins at the Viru Gate, the two round towers that mark the edge of the old town, then follows Viru Street down into Town Hall Square, the eight-century-old market square ringed by pastel merchant houses and the Gothic Town Hall. From there the route slips into St. Catherine's Passage, a narrow medieval lane lined with old gravestones and the workshops of glassblowers and potters.

Heading north, you'll reach St. Olaf's Church, once one of the tallest buildings in the world and still a sailors' landmark, before the route continues to Fat Margaret, the squat round tower guarding the old sea gate that now holds the Estonian Maritime Museum. The path then turns back inland and climbs toward Toompea hill, passing through the terraced Danish King's Garden with its three medieval towers and the legend of the falling flag.

On top of the hill the route reaches the onion domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral facing the pink Toompea Castle, then finishes at the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms, where the whole lower town spreads out in red roofs and green spires. It's a short walk by distance, 2.9 kilometers and about 42 minutes, but the climb and the views make it feel like a bigger day out.

Colorful merchant houses on Tallinn's Town Hall Square

Town Hall Square

Tallinn's Town Hall Square, the Raekoja plats, has been the center of the city for roughly eight centuries, a wide cobbled market ringed by pastel merchant houses and cafe terraces. On the southern side stands the Gothic Town Hall, the oldest of its kind in northern Europe, topped by a weathervane figure the locals call Old Thomas. Markets, festivals and a well known Christmas tree still fill the square through the year, and one of Europe's oldest working pharmacies sits in a corner, open since the early 1400s. It's the natural place to slow down with a coffee before ducking into the narrow lanes that lead off in every direction.

St. Catherine's Passage and the Lower Town Lanes

St. Catherine's Passage, the Katariina kaik, is a narrow lane running behind the ruined wall of the old St. Catherine's Church, its stones worn smooth by six centuries of foot traffic. Old carved gravestones from the church are set into one wall, and small workshops along the passage still hold the Katariina Guild's glassblowers, potters, hatmakers and quilters at work, with their pieces for sale just inside the door. Flags and lanterns hang over the colorful facades on the streets around it, and it's easy to lose twenty minutes just drifting from one lane to the next. Come slowly here, it's one of the most atmospheric corners of the whole old town.

St. Olaf's Church and the Northern Old Town

St. Olaf's Church lends its green spire to the whole northern skyline of Tallinn's old town, and for a stretch in the Middle Ages it was reckoned among the tallest buildings anywhere, built deliberately tall so it could guide ships in from the sea. The spire has burned and been rebuilt more than once, but it still towers over the lanes below, visible from almost any street in this part of town. Walking the narrow streets beneath it, you'll catch the tower appearing and disappearing between the gabled rooftops as the lanes bend. In season, a narrow stair inside climbs to a gallery near the top for one of the better views in the Baltics.

Toompea Hill and the Danish King's Garden

The climb up to Toompea hill passes through the Danish King's Garden, a terraced strip of lawn set against the old wall with three medieval towers standing over it. Local legend places a battle here in 1219, when a red flag with a white cross is said to have fallen from the sky and rallied the Danish army, becoming the flag of Denmark still flown today. At the top of the hill, the black onion domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral face the long pink facade of Toompea Castle, now Estonia's parliament, across the square, with Tall Hermann tower marking its far corner. It's a short, steep stretch, but it trades the lower town's crowds for a quieter, slower pace.

The Viewing Platforms and Town Walls

From Toompea hill, the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms give you the postcard view of Tallinn, a sweep of orange and red roofs pierced by green church spires with the medieval walls and towers threading between them and the sea beyond. Kohtuotsa looks south over the lower town and is usually the busier of the two, while Patkuli, a short walk around the rim, looks north toward St. Olaf's spire and the harbor and tends to be quieter. A long stone stairway drops from Patkuli back down into the lower town, the old route between the two halves of the city. Either platform is worth lingering at, since the view only gets better as the light changes.
