$8.99Pamětihodnosti městaUtrecht grew up around its cathedral, and these two audio walks trace that history from the tallest church tower in the Netherlands down into a two level canal where cellar doors open straight onto the water.
The Dom & Oudegracht Walk starts at Museum Speelklok inside the Buurkerk, a medieval parish church turned museum of self playing musical instruments, then crosses to the Neude Post Office, an Amsterdam School hall of glazed yellow brick now serving as the city library. From there it circles the Janskerk and the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, before finishing at Paushuize, the house built for the only Dutch pope. It's 1.6 kilometers and about 21 minutes, short enough to leave plenty of time for climbing the tower.
The Museum Quarter Walk begins down on the sunken wharves of the Oudegracht, Utrecht's two level canal with cellar doors opening straight onto the water, then heads south past Museum Catharijneconvent and the Centraal Museum, home to the country's largest collection of Gerrit Rietveld's furniture design. Right across the street waits the Miffy Museum, built around the little rabbit created by Utrecht's own Dick Bruna.
From there the walk passes the round bastion of Sonnenborgh Observatory, the national Railway Museum in its grand old station building, and the leafy lawns of Wilhelminapark, before finishing at the Rietveld Schröder House, the UNESCO listed home that still looks startlingly modern a century on. In total it's 3.5 kilometers and about 48 minutes, best saved for a day with time to spare.
Několik zastávek, které potkáte cestou, a důvody, proč u nich stojí za to zpomalit.

At about 112 meters, the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, and this close view shows off the fourteenth century stonework rising in stages toward a delicate lantern at the top. For centuries it could be seen for miles across the flat Dutch countryside, a sign of the power once held by the bishops of Utrecht. Notice the gap between the tower and the cathedral behind it, since a storm in 1674 brought down the nave that once connected them, leaving the tower standing apart. If you've booked ahead, the only way up is by guided tour, four hundred and sixty five steps past the great bells to a view over the whole city.

This bridge over the Oudegracht shows Utrecht's main canal at its busiest, cyclists and pedestrians crossing above cafe terraces that spill right down to the water's edge. What makes this canal different from Amsterdam's or Delft's is its second, lower level, a sunken walkway lined with arched cellar doors that once let merchants carry goods straight from moored boats into storage below street level. Those cellars now mostly hold restaurants, which is why the Oudegracht is one of the best places in the country to eat beside a canal. Trees lean in from both banks, softening a scene that's otherwise all brick and bicycles.

A single bicycle leans against the railing of an Oudegracht bridge, the canal running straight ahead between rows of tall narrow houses and bristling with more parked bikes along both banks. Utrecht is one of the busiest cycling cities in the world, and scenes exactly like this one repeat on practically every bridge in the center. Bikes here have the right of way on the red paved cycle paths that thread through the city, so pedestrians learn quickly to look twice before stepping off a curb. The canal curves gently out of sight toward another low stone bridge, the water calm enough to double every building in reflection.

The Nieuwegracht is a quieter cousin to the busier Oudegracht, a tree lined canal where old trees lean out over the water and handsome houses line both banks without the crowds or the cafe terraces. Parked cars and bicycles share the cobbled bank under dappled afternoon light, and the water barely ripples enough to blur the reflections opposite. This stretch runs past Museum Catharijneconvent, the national museum of Christian art, whose former convent buildings give the area a hushed, unhurried feel. It's a good place to slow down between museum stops.

After dark, the lower wharves of the Oudegracht take on a different character, lamplight spilling out of cellar restaurants and catching the water in long golden streaks. Cyclists and pedestrians still cross the bridges above, silhouetted against lit windows stacked three and four stories up the canal houses. These sunken cellars were built for medieval trade, loading goods straight from boats into storage below street level, and it's a strange thought that people now dine in rooms once stacked with merchant cargo. It's worth timing at least part of your walk for dusk if you can.
