La ce să te aștepți de la un tur pietonal audio în Ho Chi Minh City

A Ho Chi Minh City audio walk moves between the everyday side of Saigon, its parks, markets and a pink church, and the colonial axis of District 1, from a wartime palace to the city's tallest towers, with narration timed to each stop so you can focus on crossing the motorbikes instead of reading a screen.

The Ben Thành Walk starts at the Fine Arts Museum, a merchant's mansion full of paintings, plunges into Bến Thành Market, then slows under the giant trees of Tao Đàn Park before facing the War Remnants Museum and circling the student hangout of Turtle Lake, finishing at the candy pink Tân Định Church. It covers 3.7 kilometers, about 51 minutes of walking, and mixes art, food and history while staying off the main tourist boulevards.

The District 1 Walk starts at Independence Palace, where the Vietnam War ended in April 1975, then follows the old colonial axis past the red brick Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, the vaulted hall of the Central Post Office, the old Hôtel de Ville and the Opera House, before finishing on the walking street of Nguyễn Huệ beneath the Bitexco Financial Tower. It covers 2.3 kilometers, about 32 minutes, an easy morning with good coffee along the way.

Between the two walks you move from the everyday rhythms of a park full of songbird cages and a neighborhood market to the French colonial buildings and modern skyline that most visitors photograph first. Both stay flat and shaded in patches, though Saigon's heat and sudden afternoon rain showers make an early start worthwhile either way.

Pe unde să te plimbi în Ho Chi Minh City

Câteva dintre opririle pe care le vei face și motivele pentru care merită să încetinești pasul.

The yellow vaulted facade of the Saigon Central Post Office

Saigon Central Post Office

The Saigon Central Post Office is still a working post office, its great vaulted hall built between 1886 and 1891 with a curved iron roof and long rows of arched windows that feel more like a railway station than anywhere to buy a stamp. The design is often credited to Gustave Eiffel, though there's no good evidence for that claim. Old wooden telephone booths still line the walls, and for decades a letter writer named Dương Văn Ngộ sat at a desk here writing and translating letters for visitors in French and English, becoming something of a local legend along the way.

Ho Chi Minh City Hall lit up at night above a plaza

Ho Chi Minh City Hall

The old Hôtel de Ville, now Ho Chi Minh City Hall, is one of the most elaborate colonial buildings in the city, a cream and yellow confection of columns and carved figures finished in 1908 and still the seat of the city government today. At night the whole building lights up and the plaza in front fills with families and young people out for the evening air, while the pedestrian boulevard of Nguyễn Huệ stretches away toward the river, a street that was a canal before it was filled in during the late nineteenth century. It was reopened as a walking street with fountains and benches in 2015.

The helipad of the Bitexco Financial Tower in Ho Chi Minh City

Bitexco Financial Tower

The Bitexco Financial Tower rises about 260 meters above the Saigon River, designed by the architect Carlos Zapata to suggest a lotus bud, Vietnam's national flower, opening upward. Its signature feature is the round helipad that juts out from the tower high above the street, like a plate held out from a stem, and for several years it was the tallest building in the city until Landmark 81 opened upriver in 2018. It still anchors the skyline from the end of the Nguyễn Huệ walking street, and the Saigon Skydeck near the top gives a clear view back over the whole route you've just walked.

The red brick towers of Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ho Chi Minh City

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica stands in bare red brick shipped from Marseille, which has kept its warm color for well over a century since the French built it between 1877 and 1880. It mixes Romanesque style with Gothic touches, and its two bell towers later gained tall iron spires that still rise above the busy square around them. In front stands a white granite statue of the Virgin, placed here in 1959, and crowds once gathered after reports in 2005 that the statue was shedding tears, though the church never confirmed it as a miracle. The cathedral has been under long restoration, so you may only be able to admire the facade from outside for now.

The clock tower entrance to Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City

Ben Thanh Market

Bến Thành Market's clock tower is the single most recognizable image of Ho Chi Minh City, marking a market that has stood on this site since the French opened the current building in 1914. Inside is a maze of narrow aisles packed with stalls selling coffee beans, dried fruit, silk, lacquerware and conical hats, with fresh fish, meat and vegetables toward the back, and prices for visitors are often set high, so bargaining with a smile is normal in the souvenir sections. The food stalls in the middle are the best part, a good place to sit on a stool and order a bowl of noodles or a plate of grilled pork over broken rice.
