The Oaxaca Barrios Walk starts at the Basílica de la Soledad, home to the city's patron virgin, then passes the Templo de San Felipe Neri, where Benito Juárez was married, and the house where he lived as a boy. From there it crosses the shady Jardín Conzatti and finishes in the cobbled, mural-painted lanes of Jalatlaco. It covers about 2.6 kilometers, around 37 minutes of walking, through the streets where Oaxaca goes about its daily life.
The Oaxaca Centro Walk starts among the smoky grills of the Mercado 20 de Noviembre, Oaxaca's kitchen, then crosses the tree-shaded Zócalo to the cathedral and the Parisian-styled Teatro Macedonio Alcalá.
From the theater the route climbs the pedestrian Andador Macedonio Alcalá, Oaxaca's main promenade, past the contemporary art museum to the gilded Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the one-of-a-kind cactus rows of the Jardín Etnobotánico behind it. It runs about 1.9 kilometers, roughly 27 minutes of walking, and it may be the best fed of any walk we offer.
Câteva dintre opririle pe care le vei face și motivele pentru care merită să încetinești pasul.

A vintage blue van parked under flowering trees against a wall of saturated blue, is as good an introduction as any to Oaxaca's old town, where entire blocks of colonial houses are painted in deep reds, ochres and blues. Streets like this one connect the quieter western barrios to the lively, mural-painted lanes of Jalatlaco, and the color only gets richer as you go. Many of these houses have been in the same families for generations, their iron grilles and heavy wooden doors largely unchanged since colonial times. Walk slowly here, since a car or a tour bus would carry you straight past the small details that make these streets worth seeing on foot.

Spiky agave leaves silhouette against the sun, the carved stone towers of Santo Domingo rising behind them at the top of the Andador. The Dominican friars built this church and its enormous convent from the late sixteenth century into the seventeenth, with walls thick enough to survive the valley's frequent earthquakes. The sober stone facade gives no hint of what waits inside, where gilded and painted stucco covers the walls and vaults, and a carved family tree of Saint Dominic spreads across the ceiling above the entrance. The old convent beside it now holds the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, home to treasures from the Zapotec tombs of Monte Albán.

Built in the eighteenth century for the Oratorian order, this church's carved stone facade rises behind a woman walking past, the kind of ordinary moment it has watched over on this corner of Oaxaca for centuries. Oaxacans remember it less for its gilded altarpieces than for a wedding: in 1843, a 37-year-old lawyer named Benito Juárez married seventeen-year-old Margarita Maza here, a match nobody in the city's old families expected. Juárez went on to become governor of Oaxaca and then president of Mexico, leading the republic through a French invasion while his wife took their children into exile. Stand by the door for a moment and picture a small, quiet wedding in a provincial city, two people with no idea what was coming.

Straw hats, black gloves and long ribbon beards make up this costume, the kind of elaborate dress worn by dance groups from across Oaxaca state during the Guelaguetza, the great July festival held on the auditorium slopes of Cerro del Fortín above the city. Guelaguetza is a Zapotec word for a particular kind of giving, the help neighbors owe one another, and the festival still works that way: dance groups perform in regional costume and then throw gifts of fruit, bread and crafts into the crowd. If your walk happens to fall during festival season, expect exactly this kind of color and crowd filling the streets near the Basílica de la Soledad.

A woman in traditional dress balances a basket piled with marigolds on her head, both hands raised to steady it, a moment typical of one of Oaxaca's frequent street parades. Processions like this one wind through the Centro on saints' days and during the Guelaguetza season, baskets and floral arrangements held aloft as dancers move together through the old streets. Her smile is typical of the mood at these events, genuinely festive rather than staged for visitors, and locals are usually happy to have onlookers join the edges of the crowd. Keep an eye on festival listings for your dates, since stumbling onto one of these parades is one of the best accidents a visit to Oaxaca can offer.
