Edinburgh Harry Potter Audio Walking Tour (Self-Guided)

In 1993 a young single mother moved to Edinburgh with her baby daughter, very little money, and a suitcase holding the first three chapters of a children's book. Her name was Joanne Rowling, and that book became Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This walk follows the real Edinburgh story of the books: the college where she trained as a teacher, the café window where she wrote, and the hotel room where she finished the very last one. Along the way you'll meet the famous places that fans say inspired the stories, and at each one you'll hear what Rowling herself has said about them, which is often not what the shop signs tell you. Fan belief and her own words are clearly labelled. This is an unofficial fan walk, not made with or endorsed by Warner Bros. or J.K. Rowling. It's one of our self-guided walking tours, about 3.3 kilometers from Moray House on Holyrood Road, through the Old Town, to the Balmoral Hotel beside Waverley Station.

Before you set off

Allow about an hour and a half, with roughly 45 minutes of walking between stops. Edinburgh's Old Town is hilly, and the first leg climbs from Holyrood Road up toward Nicolson Street, so take it steady. Victoria Street slopes too. Greyfriars Kirkyard is open in the daytime, so check its hours if you're starting late. The Elephant House is a working café again and can have a queue; going in is optional, and its hours are worth checking before you go. George Heriot's School is a working school, so you'll see it from the gate only, and the famous room at the Balmoral is a private suite. Edinburgh weather turns quickly, so bring a layer whatever the season. To reach the start, buses run along the Canongate and Holyrood Road, and Waverley Station is about 800 meters away. The walk finishes right beside Waverley, so getting home is easy.

Moray House, Holyrood Road

You're on Holyrood Road, where it meets St John Street. The buildings around you are Moray House, today the University of Edinburgh's School of Education. You'll see it from the street.

In August 1995, Joanne Rowling walked in here as a student. She had enrolled on a one-year teacher-training course, a postgraduate certificate of education in modern languages. She was a single mother with little money, and she needed a career that could support her daughter. Teaching was the practical plan. As part of her training she taught real classes at Leith Academy, a school in Leith, north of the city center. She graduated in 1996.

So hold that picture for a moment. Whatever this book about a boy wizard was going to become, it had to fit around lectures, lesson plans and a small child. Her biographers don't even agree on exactly when she finished the first full manuscript, before this course began or during it, so we won't pretend to know the date. What's certain is that the book and the teaching course ran side by side.

But the first real place on this walk comes before this college. Let's go back a year or two, to around 1994, and an upstairs window on Nicolson Street. Walk west along Holyrood Road, turn left and climb the Pleasance, then turn right along Drummond Street until it meets Nicolson Street. Look across to the upstairs windows near the corner. About eight minutes, uphill.

Former Nicolson's Café

Find 6A Nicolson Street and look up, past the shop at street level, to the upstairs windows. That upstairs room was Nicolson's café. The coffee shop at ground level is a different business, so don't mix the two up. Below the window you'll find a small plaque marking the spot.

Rewind to around 1994, before Moray House. Nicolson's was co-owned by Rowling's brother-in-law, and she came here to write. Years later, in a 2001 BBC documentary, she called it the place "where I wrote huge parts of the book." That's her own description, and it gives this window a strong claim to being where the first book took shape.

People noticed her. A neighbour later remembered watching "the lady sat in a window every day." And in 1997 a local photographer, Marius Alexander, photographed her writing here.

Nicolson's itself is long gone. The premises later became a café called Spoon, which opened in 2009 and closed on 9 October 2020. Today the upstairs room is another restaurant, and only the plaque outside tells passers-by what happened above their heads.

Remember that word "huge," because a few streets away there's a café that tells a bigger story about itself. Walk north up Nicolson Street onto South Bridge, turn left into Chambers Street and follow it past the National Museum of Scotland to George IV Bridge. Turn right, and the Elephant House is a few doors along. About six minutes.

The Elephant House

Edinburgh Castle from Greyfriars Kirkyard, the view behind the Elephant House

You're on George IV Bridge, outside number 21. This is the Elephant House, the café that for years has billed itself as the birthplace of Harry Potter. It's open again, and you're welcome to go in, but the story works just as well from the pavement.

Here's what many fans believe: that Harry Potter was born at a table in this room. Here's what Rowling said, on Twitter in 2020: "I'd been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so it's not the birthplace, but I did write in there so we'll let them off!" So both things are true. She wrote here, but only after years of writing elsewhere, including that upstairs window on Nicolson Street.

The café has its own drama too. In August 2021 a fire that broke out next door spread into the café, closed it and damaged several neighbouring businesses. It stayed shut for years while the building was repaired, and on Monday 29 December 2025 it finally reopened. The owners marked the day with a count: "After 1,587 days." One tradition survived the rebuild. Fans still leave messages on the walls of the toilets, a running wall of graffiti.

So one claim down: the birthplace is really a later chapter. But the next stop is where the fan legends get thick. It's a graveyard where people have been finding names from the books for years, and where Rowling's own child went on a walking tour and came home with news. Head south along George IV Bridge, bear right into Candlemaker Row, and go in through the kirkyard gate. Cross to the western wall, the far side. About five minutes.
