Co vás čeká na pěší trase s audioprůvodcem v Hong Kong

Hong Kong began on a thin strip of shore, and an audio walk here moves from British banks and courts on Hong Kong Island to a smoking temple and dried seafood shops, then crosses the harbor to Kowloon's grand old hotel, a mosque and a night market that wakes up after dark.

The Hong Kong Central Walk starts at the Star Ferry pier, crosses Statue Square and climbs past St. John's Cathedral to Tai Kwun, the old police station, magistracy and prison compound, then follows Hollywood Road west to the incense-filled Man Mo Temple. It covers 3.7 kilometers, about 53 minutes of walking, across 8 stops, with a real climb in its first half up from Queen's Road.

The Kowloon Walk starts on the harborfront Avenue of Stars, passes the old Clock Tower and the grand Peninsula hotel, then heads north up Nathan Road past the Kowloon Mosque to the stalls of Temple Street Night Market and the Tin Hau Temple at Yau Ma Tei. It covers 3.5 kilometers, about 49 minutes of walking, across 7 stops, and it is flat the whole way.

Both routes end among working markets rather than monuments, Central's finishing on Sheung Wan's shops of dried scallops and abalone, Kowloon's at the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market, which has been trading since 1913. Start Central in the morning for the quietest streets, and Kowloon in the late afternoon so you reach Temple Street as the stalls light up.

Kam se vydat v Hong Kong

Několik zastávek, které potkáte cestou, a důvody, proč u nich stojí za to zpomalit.

The facade of Man Mo Temple in Hong Kong

Man Mo Temple

Man Mo Temple was built in 1847 by two wealthy Chinese merchants, and it honors two gods: Man, the god of literature, who students pray to before exams, and Mo, the red faced god of war and a model of loyalty and courage. Step over the threshold and your eyes need a moment to adjust, since huge coils of incense hang from the ceiling, burning for days on end, each one carrying a worshipper's wishes on a red tag. The temple was always more than a place of prayer, with a public hall next door where the Chinese community once settled its own disputes. Visit quietly and keep your camera down around people at prayer.

A covered market hall in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

A Market in Sheung Wan

This stairway leads down into one of the covered market halls that still serve Sheung Wan's streets, strung with red lanterns and New Year banners here and busy with the daily trade of a neighborhood market. Sheung Wan grew up in the nineteenth century around the Nam Pak Hong, the North South trading firms that bought and sold goods between northern China, the southern ports and Southeast Asia, using Hong Kong as their middleman. A few streets over, Des Voeux Road West is lined with shops selling dried scallops, abalone and other delicacies of Cantonese cooking, some run by the same families for generations.

The old Clock Tower glimpsed between buildings in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

The Clock Tower

Glimpsed here between two modern towers, the red brick and granite Clock Tower is all that survives of the old Kowloon terminus of the Kowloon Canton Railway. The line opened in 1910, linking the harbor to the border and on to Guangzhou, and for decades this was the city's front door to the mainland, with connections that could in principle carry you all the way to Europe by rail. When the terminus moved east in the 1970s, the station itself was knocked down, but people campaigned to save the tower, and it now stands alone as a protected monument beside the Star Ferry pier, with the Cultural Centre and the Space Museum occupying the old station's footprint.

A busy market street in Kowloon, Hong Kong

A Kowloon Street

This is the kind of street that gives Kowloon its texture, stalls spilling onto narrow pavements under a tangle of signs and awnings, with shoppers moving at their own pace between phone stalls, snack counters and small shops. Streets like this one connect Nathan Road, the wide avenue locals once nicknamed Nathan's Folly for being absurdly broad when it was built, to the older, earthier blocks of Yau Ma Tei. Much of ordinary Hong Kong life still happens right at street level here rather than inside malls, and the only way to catch it, the smell of charcoal, the clatter of a claypot lid, a porter shouting for room, is on foot.
