Bruges In Bruges Film Audio Walking Tour (Self-Guided)

Two hitmen are sent to wait in Bruges after a job in London goes terribly wrong. One of them, Ken, falls in love with the place. The other, Ray, can't stand it. Then their boss, Harry, makes a phone call, and the fairy-tale city becomes the setting for a reckoning. That's In Bruges, the 2008 film written and directed by Martin McDonagh, with Colin Farrell as Ray, Brendan Gleeson as Ken and Ralph Fiennes as Harry. This walk lets Bruges tell the story, scene by scene, in the places where it happened, and the city tells it in its own order. We begin on the night everything turns, and the first three stops carry you through the film's last act. Then we go back to the day Ray and Ken arrived and walk through the days that led there, and we finish at a hidden church that holds one of the film's best secrets. Spoilers throughout, and the dark parts are told gently, with no gore. This is an unofficial fan walk, not made with or endorsed by the filmmakers or the studio. It's one of our self-guided walking tours, about 2.6 kilometers from Koningin Astridpark to the Jerusalem Church.

Before you set off

Allow about an hour and a quarter, with 35 to 40 minutes of walking. Bruges is flat, but the old streets are cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. The station is south-west of the center, and De Lijn buses link it with the old town, so check the buses before you go. Two things to check ahead. The Groeninge Museum is due to close on the 11th of January, 2027, for about four years of refurbishment, with highlights of its collection moving next door to a space called BRUSK from the 12th of March, 2027. Whether the painting from the film will be on show there isn't confirmed, so check before you go. The Belfry recommends timed tickets and sometimes closes for maintenance, so check its opening too. The Jerusalem Church is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays and public holidays. The film deals with violence and suicide; here those moments are told briefly and with care.

Koningin Astridpark

You're in Koningin Astridpark, a quiet public park with a bandstand, a pond and a children's play area. Find a spot by the water and keep your voice low. This is the most tender scene in the film, and it happened here.

By this point Ray and Ken have been in Bruges for days, waiting. Back in London, on a job, something went horribly wrong: a child was killed by accident. Ray is carrying it everywhere. Their boss, Harry, lives by a strict rule about anyone who harms a child, and now he makes the call. Ken's job in Bruges was never really sightseeing. He's been told to kill Ray.

So Ken comes looking for him, and he finds him here, in this park. And then Ken sees what Ray is about to do. Ray is about to take his own life.

Ken stops him. In that moment the older man chooses his friend over his orders. Instead of carrying out Harry's instruction, he tells Ray to get out of Bruges and he puts him on a train, out of Harry's reach, or so he hopes. It's the kindest thing anyone does in the film, and it sets everything else in motion.

There's something fitting about it happening in a place like this, with a pond and a playground. The film is full of beautiful places that hold terrible thoughts. Bruges keeps looking like a postcard while the people in it struggle.

Ken has saved Ray. Now Harry is on his way to deal with both of them, and the painting that explains why this story is about judgement is just a few minutes away. Leave the park on its north-west side and head west through the side streets toward the Dijver, the street along the canal. The Groeninge Museum is set back from the Dijver at number 12. About eight minutes.

Groeninge Museum

You're at the Groeninge Museum, the city's fine arts museum. Somewhere south of here, across the Minnewater bridge by the Lake of Love, Harry is arriving in Bruges. The judgement Ray fears is walking into town.

To understand what that means, step back into a scene from earlier in the film. The crew was allowed inside this museum, and here Ray and Ken stand in front of a painting of the Last Judgement. It's a triptych, a painting in three panels, attributed to Hieronymus Bosch. Scholars still debate whether it's by Bosch himself or by his workshop, and it was painted sometime after about 1486.

Standing in front of it, the two men talk about what comes after death: heaven, hell and purgatory, the in-between place. Ray, who can't forgive himself, takes it personally. That's the heart of the film. Ray and Ken have done terrible things. Are they beyond saving? Is there a purgatory for them? Bruges itself starts to feel like that in-between place, beautiful and frozen, where they wait to find out what happens to them.

Hold on to the painting. Its strange figures come back at the very end, out in the street.

If you want to see it, check before you go. The museum closes on the 11th of January, 2027, for about four years, and its highlights move next door to BRUSK from the 12th of March, 2027. Whether the Bosch goes on show there hasn't been confirmed.

Now walk west along the Dijver to the next stop, the courtyard beside the tall tower of the Church of Our Lady. About three minutes.

Gruuthuse courtyard

The brick tower and stepped gables of the Gruuthuse, Bruges

You're at the Gruuthuse, a 15th-century city palace that is now a museum, beside the Church of Our Lady. Look up at the church tower rising above you. This is where the film ends.

In the film, a movie is being shot in Bruges, a film within the film. That set was placed mainly right here, outside the Gruuthuse. According to the production notes, its look was designed to echo a Bosch painting you glimpse elsewhere in the film. Picture the courtyard full of extras in masks and peasant costumes, made up to look like figures straight out of a Bosch painting. One scholarly article traces them to his Temptation of Saint Anthony. The painting from the museum has come to life.

Now the chase. Harry has come to Bruges. Ken has done everything he could to warn Ray, and you'll hear how when we reach the Belfry. Harry chases Ray past the hotel and along the canal, and McDonagh has said the chase was shot as a real, continuous route through the streets. You'll walk part of it next. Ray is wounded, and he stumbles onto this set, among the masked figures.

Then comes the twist the whole film has been building to. Harry fires, and the figure he hits is Jimmy, an American actor from the film shoot, in costume. Harry believes he has killed a child. And Harry, true to his own rule, the very rule that made him order Ray's death, turns it on himself. The man who judged Ray is judged by himself.

The last moments belong to Ray. Wounded, he thinks about hell, and he hopes to live. The film ends before we find out.

Before you leave, the Church of Our Lady is worth a look inside. It holds Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, the only sculpture by Michelangelo to leave Italy in his lifetime.

That's the ending. Now let's go back to the beginning, to the day Ray and Ken arrived. Walk back out to the Dijver and follow the canal north-east to Rozenhoedkaai. About five minutes.
