Wat kun je verwachten van een audiotour door Dubrovnik

A Dubrovnik audio walk follows Game of Thrones through the city that played King's Landing, from the park of the Purple Wedding and the fortress of Lovrijenac to the Jesuit Staircase where Cersei's walk began, and tells the real story of the Republic of Ragusa under every scene.

The walk opens in Gradac Park, where Joffrey's wedding feast was filmed, then climbs to Fort Lovrijenac, the Red Keep of Season 2, on its rock 37 meters above the sea. It enters the Old Town at the Pile Gate, where the riot against Joffrey played out, and climbs inside the walls to Minčeta Tower, which played the House of the Undying in Qarth.

From there it crosses the Stradun to Rupe, the Republic's granary with 15 grain pits cut into the rock, and reaches the top of the Jesuit Staircase, built in 1738 on the model of the Spanish Steps, where Cersei's walk of atonement begins. It follows her down past the Rector's Palace, the Spice King's courtyard, and out to the Ploče Gate, where her walk ended.

It's about 2.1 kilometers, roughly 31 minutes of walking, but give it an hour to an hour and a half with the stops, and expect plenty of stone steps. Spoilers run all the way through, and this is an unofficial fan walk, not made with or endorsed by HBO.

Waar te wandelen in Dubrovnik

Een paar van de stops waar je langskomt, en waarom ze de moeite waard zijn om even bij stil te staan.

Fort Lovrijenac on its rocky headland above the Adriatic in Dubrovnik

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac stands alone on its rock about 37 meters above the sea, outside the city walls, keeping watch over Dubrovnik's western side. Its origins are traced to the early 1000s, it's first mentioned in the records in 1301, and in 1464 its western and northern walls were doubled in thickness, reaching 12 meters in places. Over the gate a Latin line says that freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world, the creed of the real city. In Season 2 it played the Red Keep, where Joffrey held his name day tourney.

Dubrovnik's city walls and a round bastion on the cliffs by Pile bay

Pile Gate and the Walls

These are the walls you walk into at the Pile Gate, seen from the rocks of Pile bay, with a round bastion rising straight from the cliff. They run for 1,940 meters around the Old Town, with 16 towers, three fortresses and six bastions, up to 25 meters high and 4 to 6 meters thick on the land side. They belonged to the Republic of Ragusa, which ran its own affairs from 1358 to 1808. In Season 2 the harbor below the gate saw Myrcella off to Dorne, and on the way back the crowd rioted against Joffrey right around here.

The round Minčeta Tower at the top of Dubrovnik's city walls

Minčeta Tower

Minčeta is the big round tower at the north west corner of the walls, and you can climb to the top on the City Walls ticket. Two builders' names are tied to it, Michelozzo of Florence and Juraj Dalmatinac, a master builder of the Dalmatian coast. In the Season 2 finale its base played the outside of the House of the Undying in Qarth, where Daenerys searched for her stolen dragons. It's a nice irony: a warlocks' lair played by a tower that a city of merchants built because they trusted stone more than magic.

The arcaded Gothic and Renaissance front of the Rector's Palace in Dubrovnik

Rector's Palace

The Rector's Palace is Gothic and Renaissance, with the arcade of carved columns you see along its front, and today it holds the Cultural History Museum. It was the seat of the Rector, head of the Republic of Ragusa, and here is the twist: a Rector served for just one month before someone else took the post, so that no single man could gather too much power. In Season 2 its courtyard played the palace of the Spice King of Qarth, where Daenerys came asking for ships. The palace charges its own entry.

A stone bridge leading through the walls to the Ploče Gate in Dubrovnik

Ploče Gate

This stone bridge leads to the Ploče Gate, the eastern entrance to the Old Town, beside the Revelin fort. In the Season 5 finale Cersei's walk of atonement ends here: it began at the top of the Jesuit Staircase, and she crossed this bridge into the Red Keep. The lane you arrive by, St Dominika Street beside the Dominican monastery, was a King's Landing market in Season 2. The real Republic ended more quietly, on 31 January 1808, when Marshal Marmont dissolved its Senate after 450 years.
