The Battery Point Walk starts in Franklin Square and drops to Constitution Dock, the small basin still full of working fishing boats, then follows the sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place, 2.2 kilometers, about 31 minutes in all.
From there you climb Kelly's Steps, cut into the cliff by a whaler in 1839, up into Battery Point, the cottage neighborhood where sailors and dock workers once lived, finishing at the Georgian townhouse that's now the Narryna Heritage Museum.
The Domain and Gardens Walk goes the other way, 3.2 kilometers, about 46 minutes, from a convict-era prison chapel past the Theatre Royal and up onto the Queens Domain for the Cenotaph war memorial and its avenue of trees, then down past Government House to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens by the river.
Một vài điểm dừng bạn sẽ đi qua và lý do tại sao chúng xứng đáng để bạn đi chậm lại và thưởng thức.

Constitution Dock is the small, square basin in front of you, still full of working fishing boats and the floating punts that sell fish and chips straight off the water. Convicts dug it in the 1840s, and it was named for the act that opened the way to self-government for the Australian colonies. Once a year the dock has its moment of fame, when the fastest boats in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race tie up here, often in the middle of the night, to cheers from the quay. The rest of the year it's simply the working heart of the waterfront, gulls and boats and the smell of the sea.

Founded in 1818, these are the second oldest botanical gardens in Australia, laid out on a slope above the river that was muwinina country for thousands of years before any of it was planted. Wander the paths among tree ferns, conifers and a small pond, and look for the Arthur Wall, built by convicts with fireplaces inside to keep frost off fruit trees. There's a Japanese garden too, and a Subantarctic Plant House that copies the cool, misty climate of a wild island deep in the Southern Ocean. It's a calm, green place to end a walk that started among convict stone and dockside warehouses.

Battery Point is a living neighborhood of small colonial cottages, each with its own fence and front garden, built for the sailors, merchants and dock workers who once lived a few minutes' walk from the wharves below. The streets roll gently rather than climb, and the architecture is the real attraction here, painted brick and timber fronts that have barely changed in a century and a half. Keep your voice down as you wander, since people still live behind these doors. It's a quiet contrast to the bustle of Salamanca Place just down the hill, and worth slowing down for.

The Queens Domain is the big green hill between the city and the river, open parkland with wide views back over the rooftops to the water. It's the part of this walk with the most sky, a change from the convict-era streets below, and on a clear day you can pick out the harbor, the bridge and the mountain all from the same spot. The hill carries the city's war memorial and an avenue of trees planted one for every soldier who died in the First World War. Climb up here for the view alone, or to see how the old town and the modern city sit together from above.

Hobart's old quarter is full of nineteenth century sandstone churches like this one, their spires catching the late sun above the rooftops of the convict-era streets. The city's oldest buildings cluster close together near the waterfront, a reminder of how compact early Hobart was, everything within a few minutes' walk of the docks. Look for the warm sandstone that was quarried locally and used across the old town, from churches to warehouses to the old customs house. It's a detail easy to miss at street level but obvious from a slight distance, the whole old quarter glowing gold in the evening light.
