Trải nghiệm gì trong tour đi bộ âm thanh tại Nafplio

A Nafplio audio walk takes you through marble-paved lanes from the Lion of Bavaria to the harbor, past the churches and squares where Greece's first capital took shape, with the Bourtzi fortress waiting out in the bay the whole way.

The walk starts at the Lion of Bavaria, a lion carved straight into the rock on the edge of the Pronia quarter, raised in memory of the Bavarian soldiers who came with Greece's first king. From there you head into town past Kolokotronis Park, where a bronze statue of the War of Independence commander looks up at the fortress of Palamidi on the hill above, the same fortress where he was later held as a prisoner.

In the middle stretch you walk the Venetian lanes of the old town itself, past Agios Georgios Cathedral with its painted interior and a throne built for King Otto, then on to the small church of Agios Spyridon, where Greece's first governor was shot on his way to Sunday service. The lanes open out at Syntagma Square, the main square, where the old Venetian naval arsenal now holds the archaeological museum.

The last stretch drops down to Nafplio Harbour along the waterfront promenade, where locals take their evening stroll, and ends at a small lighthouse looking straight out at the Bourtzi, the little fortress that guards the harbor from its own rocky island. The whole route covers 2.5 kilometers, about 34 minutes of walking, over flat ground the entire way.

Địa điểm đi bộ tại Nafplio

Một vài điểm dừng bạn sẽ đi qua và lý do tại sao chúng xứng đáng để bạn đi chậm lại và thưởng thức.

Red-tiled rooftops of Nafplio's Old Town

Nafplio Old Town

The old town is a tight grid of marble-paved lanes laid out by the Venetians, closed to most cars and packed with churches, fountains and tall shuttered houses in cream, ochre and faded pink. Red tile roofs step down the slope toward the sea, and from above you can pick out the old mosque turned cinema and the stone mansions built when this was Greece's first capital. At street level the lanes stay shady and cool even at midday, opening now and then onto a small square with a cafe table or two. It rewards slow walking rather than a straight line between sights, since the best details, a carved doorway, a Venetian lion, an Ottoman inscription, are easy to miss if you hurry.

Akronafplia and Nafplio's fortress headland

Akronafplia

Akronafplia is the rocky headland rising straight behind the old town, the oldest fortified part of Nafplio and walled since ancient times, long before the Venetians or Ottomans arrived. Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans each added their own stretch of wall as they took the town in turn, and the result is a thick band of fortification running along the ridge above the rooftops. Walking the lanes below, you keep catching glimpses of it through gaps between the houses, pale stone against the sky. The view from up here takes in the whole sweep of the old town, the harbor, and the Argolic Gulf beyond, with the Bourtzi sitting small and square out in the water.

The Bourtzi fortress in Nafplio's harbor

The Bourtzi

Out in the middle of the harbor sits the Bourtzi, a miniature fortress that fills almost the whole of its own small island. The Venetians built it in the 1470s to guard the narrow entrance to the harbor, and a chain could once be stretched from the islet to the shore to seal the port against enemy ships. Its guns faced every direction, working together with the walls of Akronafplia and the heights of Palamidi above the town. After independence it had stranger lives, for a time housing the town's executioners and later serving as a small hotel. Today it stands quiet, at its best in the late afternoon when it turns to a dark silhouette against the water.

A stone gateway in the walls of Palamidi fortress above Nafplio

Palamidi Fortress

High on the hill above the old town stands Palamidi, the great fortress the Venetians built in the early 1700s to hold Nafplio against the Ottomans. Greek fighters took it in a night assault in 1822, which opened the way for the town below to surrender, and the War of Independence commander Theodoros Kolokotronis was later held prisoner inside its walls after a dispute with the Bavarian regency. Locals like to tell visitors that the stairway up to the fortress has 999 steps, though most people who count come up with fewer. Within its walls, old stone gateways and bastions still stand, built in layers by the different powers who held this coast, with wide views back down over the town and the bay.

Nafplio's harbor front and waterfront promenade

Nafplio Harbour

The waterfront promenade, Akti Miaouli, curves along the edge of the old town with the calm water of the Argolic Gulf on one side and cafe tables on the other. This was the reason Nafplio mattered for centuries, a sheltered harbor that Venetian ships called at when the town was one of the republic's prized ports, and where the new king of Greece came ashore in 1833 to take up his throne. In the evening the promenade fills with families out for the volta, the slow walk up and down the water that is as much a part of life here as dinner itself, with the Bourtzi floating out in the bay and the hills of the Peloponnese turning soft colors behind it.
