สิ่งที่จะได้สัมผัสจากทัวร์เดินชมพร้อมเสียงบรรยายใน Chicago

A Chicago audio walk threads through the Loop's canyon of skyscrapers and along the river to the lake, with narration timed to each landmark so you can look straight up at the towers instead of down at a map.

The Loop Architecture Walk starts under the Tiffany glass dome of the Chicago Cultural Center, crosses Millennium Park to Cloud Gate and the Art Institute's bronze lions, then heads into the financial district for the load bearing brick of the Monadnock Building, the Art Deco Chicago Board of Trade and the gilded lobby of the Rookery, before finishing under the marquee of the Chicago Theatre. It covers 3.4 kilometers, about 51 minutes of walking.

The River and Magnificent Mile Walk starts at the corncob towers of Marina City, follows the river to the white Wrigley Building and the stone fragments set into Tribune Tower, then turns up Michigan Avenue past the Driehaus mansion museum and the little limestone castle of the old Water Tower. It covers 2.4 kilometers, about 35 minutes, and is the shorter and easier of the two.

Between the two walks you cover the story of a city that rebuilt itself after the Great Fire of 1871 and then reached for the sky, from a castle that survived the flames to the steel giant at 875 North Michigan Avenue that changed how skyscrapers are engineered. The river route ends on the sand at Oak Street Beach, with Lake Michigan stretching out in front of you.

Skyscrapers of the Loop skyline in downtown Chicago

The Loop Skyline

The Loop is Chicago's dense downtown core, ringed by the elevated train tracks that have circled it since the 1890s, and its skyline works like an open air museum of how skyscrapers evolved. Walking its streets you pass a load bearing brick giant from 1891 standing a few blocks from steel framed towers that came only a few years later, each pushing a little higher than the last. The elevated trains rattle overhead through much of the walk, part of the soundtrack of the neighborhood, while the narrow canyons between buildings open suddenly onto plazas full of public art. It's a skyline built to be looked up at, which is exactly what this walk asks you to do.

Visitors beneath the reflective Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago

Millennium Park and Cloud Gate

Millennium Park was built over what used to be an ugly stretch of railway tracks and parking lots, and today it's one of the most popular places in the city, anchored by Cloud Gate, the giant polished steel sculpture everyone calls the Bean. Walk all the way around it and then underneath, into the hollow where your reflection twists and multiplies above your head. The sculpture is made of more than a hundred steel plates welded together until the seams disappear, so the whole thing looks like one drop of liquid mercury that landed on the plaza. Just south, the Crown Fountain's video screens send water spouting from giant projected faces, and Frank Gehry's steel band shell curves overhead to the north.

The marble and gold light court inside the Rookery building in Chicago

Historic Loop Lobbies

Some of the Loop's best architecture hides behind ordinary looking office doors, and the lobby of the Rookery is the best example on this walk. Burnham and Root designed the building in 1888 on the site of a temporary City Hall where pigeons used to roost, which is how it got its name, and Frank Lloyd Wright later redesigned the central light court in 1905, covering the old iron frame in white marble and gold. Light pours down through the glass ceiling onto a spiral staircase curling up in a glass bay at the back. Across the street, a corner that once held the Home Insurance Building, often called the first skyscraper in the world, is a reminder of just how much architectural history is packed into these few blocks.

An elevated train crossing a bridge over the Chicago River downtown

The Chicago River and the L

The Chicago River cuts straight through downtown, lined with glass towers and crossed by trestle bridges that carry the elevated trains, known locally as the L, rattling past at regular intervals. This is the river that engineers famously reversed the flow of in 1900, sending its water toward the Mississippi instead of into Lake Michigan, the city's drinking water source. Walking along it you'll pass the corncob towers of Marina City and cross bridges with carved stone bridgehouses telling the story of the city's rebuilding after the 1871 fire. It's one of the best vantage points in Chicago for watching boats and the trains slide past all at once.

Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile

Michigan Avenue, the stretch everyone calls the Magnificent Mile, is Chicago's grand shopping street, running north from the river past department stores, hotels and a run of architectural landmarks hiding in plain sight among the storefronts. It's wide and busy, especially on weekends, with the wind off the lake growing stronger the closer you get to the water. Along the way you'll pass the limestone castle of the old Water Tower, one of the only structures to survive the Great Fire, and the black steel tower at 875 North Michigan Avenue, still called the John Hancock Center by most Chicagoans. A weekday morning is the calmest time to walk it before the shopping crowds arrive.
