The Porto Ribeira Walk starts at Carmo Church in the upper town, its whole flank covered in blue and white tiles, then passes the Clerigos Tower, the baroque bell tower that anchors the skyline and gives you your bearings for the rest of the descent.
From there the route drops into Sao Bento Station, whose ordinary entrance hides one of the most beautiful tiled rooms in the country, then on to the fortress-like cathedral with its terrace view over the red roofs, and down into the gilded interior of the Church of Sao Francisco.
The walk ends at the river itself, through Ribeira Square and out onto the Dom Luis I Bridge, where you can look back up the hillside you just came down. It's about 3.3 kilometers in total, roughly 47 minutes of walking, almost entirely downhill.

The Ribeira is the postcard of Porto, a row of tall narrow houses in faded colors stacked up the slope right at the water's edge. Come out onto the square here and the whole scene opens up: the river, the boats, the great iron bridge, and the wine lodges on the far bank. Cafe tables spill across the cobbles, buskers play, and the old houses lean over it all in washed out reds and yellows. This little square was the rough heart of the old fishing quarter, and something of that unpolished life still clings to it. On the walk this is where the long downhill finally pays off, before the last short stretch to the bridge.

The Clerigos Tower is the tall baroque bell tower you can see from half the city, a slender stone finger pointing up above the rooftops. The church at its base is worth a glance, but the tower is the real landmark, and if you have the legs for the climb up its winding stair, it gives you the best rooftop view in Porto. Even from the ground it's a fine sight, all carved stone and height, and it's the moment on this walk where you get your bearings, because from here the city falls away downhill toward the river you're heading for. It also pops back into view from half the streets in Porto, so you can navigate all day by it.

Sao Bento looks like an ordinary railway station from the street, but step inside the entrance hall and you walk into one of the most beautiful rooms in the country. The walls are covered floor to ceiling in blue and white tiles showing scenes from Portuguese history, thousands of them, glowing in the light from the high windows, and it's free to walk in and look. Trains still come and go beyond the hall, which makes the beauty of the room feel casual rather than roped off behind glass. Look for the big panels showing old battles and royal weddings, and the frieze tracing the story of transport, from oxcart to railway.

The cathedral, the Se, is the fortress-like church that crowns the oldest part of the city, heavy and solid, built more like a stronghold than a chapel, which tells you how defensive this hilltop once was. The real prize is the terrace out front, a wide stone platform looking out over red roofs down to the river and across to the far bank, the view that sells Porto in every photograph. The cloister beside the church has its own tiled walls worth a look. On this walk, the terrace marks where the streets start dropping sharply toward the water.

Between the upper town and the river, Porto's old town climbs the hillside in tightly packed, colorful houses, laundry strung between windows and trams rattling past baroque facades below the Clerigos Tower. This stretch is a working neighborhood as much as a pretty one, which is exactly what gives Porto its character rather than feeling staged for visitors. The streets are steep and can be slick after rain, so they reward a slow pace, and the walk uses the descent to let the city gradually reveal its river. Look for the azulejos, the blue and white tiles, on facades as you pass.
