The Split Palace Walk starts on the Riva, the wide seafront promenade in front of the palace, then slips through the old sea gate into the vaulted Roman cellars known as the substructures. From there you climb up into the Peristyle, the grand colonnaded courtyard at the heart of the palace, where the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, once Diocletian's own mausoleum, rises beside the small Temple of Jupiter.
In the middle stretch, the route carries you north through the palace to the Golden Gate, the old landward entrance, where the huge bronze statue of Gregory of Nin stands just outside the walls. Locals rub his toe for luck. From there you double back to the two medieval squares just west of the palace, the Pjaca and the grand red arcaded Prokurative, both still full of cafe life.
The last stretch leaves the old town behind for Forest Park Marjan, the pine covered hill at the western edge of the peninsula. A path of stone steps climbs through the old Varos quarter into the woods, and the first viewpoint terrace opens up a full panorama back over Split's red roofs, the harbor and the islands. It is a short walk in total, about 2.6 kilometers and 41 minutes of actual walking, though most people take a half day over it.

This is the ceremonial heart of Diocletian's Palace, a colonnaded courtyard ringed by imported Roman stone, with the slender medieval bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius climbing above it. The cathedral began life as the emperor's own mausoleum, a strange twist since Diocletian persecuted Christians, and the tower you see here is the symbol of Split, visible from almost everywhere in the old town. Looking straight up at it from the courtyard below gives you a sense of just how tall and ornate the tiers of columns and arches really are. In the evenings people sit on the steps here with a drink while a singer performs, the same stones serving as a stage seventeen centuries on. If your legs are up for it, the climb up the open stairways inside the tower rewards you with a view over the whole red-roofed old town.

The Riva is the wide, palm-lined seafront esplanade that runs along the front of Diocletian's Palace, and it is where Split comes to stroll, meet, and drink coffee. Seen from above, you can pick out the broad paved promenade, a circular mosaic set into the stone near the water, and a boat moored at the quay with the harbor stretching out beyond. The palace's old southern wall runs directly behind the cafe terraces, hiding a small doorway, the former sea gate, that once let boats sail right up to the palace when the sea reached further inland. Take a seat at one of the waterfront tables for a few minutes and watch the town go by, especially in the golden hour before dinner, because the slow seafront stroll here is a genuine local ritual rather than something staged for visitors.

Just outside the Golden Gate, once the grand Roman entrance facing the road inland, stands the towering bronze statue of Gregory of Nin, a medieval Croatian bishop who fought for the right to hold Mass in the Croatian language rather than Latin. The sculpture, by the Croatian artist Ivan Mestrovic, shows him in long robes with one hand raised, framed against the weathered stone of the old palace walls behind. Look at his left foot as you pass: countless hands have rubbed it smooth and golden, since local tradition says doing so brings good luck and ensures you will return to Split. Give it a rub yourself, as everyone else does, then look along the wall here for a real sense of the palace as the fortress it once was, long before shops and homes filled in its courtyards.

At the western tip of the peninsula, beyond the medieval squares of the old town, the pine covered slopes of Marjan rise straight out of the sea, the hill that has sheltered and shaded Split for centuries. A path of stone steps climbs through the old fishermen's quarter of Varos and into the woods, a climb short enough to manage in regular shoes if you take it slowly. From the first viewpoint terrace, the whole red roofed old town spreads out below, the bell tower rising over the palace walls, the harbor full of boats and the islands scattered across the Adriatic beyond. Locals come up for a jog or simply the view.

West of Diocletian's Palace, where the medieval town spilled out beyond the Roman walls, stands the Prokurative, more formally the Republic Square, one of the more unusual public spaces in Split. Matching arcaded buildings in a deep Venetian red frame three sides of the square, modeled closely on the grand square of Venice itself, while the fourth side opens straight onto the sea. Cafe tables spread out under the arcades through the day, and the open square often hosts concerts in the evening. It sits only a short walk from the Pjaca, the older civic square just inside the Roman walls.
