The Thessaloniki Byzantine Walk starts at the sunken Roman Forum, once the civic heart of the city on the Via Egnatia, then climbs to the Church of Agios Dimitrios, the city's biggest and most beloved, built over the spot where its patron saint is said to have been martyred. It continues to the fifth-century Panagia Acheiropoietos and the Rotunda, a massive domed building raised by the emperor Galerius around AD 300, then passes his triumphal arch and palace ruins on the way to the Archaeological Museum. It covers 2.6 kilometers, about 36 minutes of walking, across 6 stops.
The Thessaloniki Waterfront Walk follows the water from the old port warehouses, now home to the city's film festival, through the restaurants of Ladadika and the grand Aristotelous Square, built after a fire destroyed the old city center in 1917. It passes the eighth-century Church of Hagia Sophia and the White Tower, the symbol of the city, on its way along the seafront. It covers 3.2 kilometers, about 44 minutes of walking, across 7 stops, and it is flat and paved the entire way.
The walk ends past the bronze statue of Alexander the Great on his horse and at the Umbrellas sculpture on the new waterfront, timed well for sunset, when the light over the gulf turns gold and Mount Olympus sometimes appears on the far shore. Both routes have little shade, so an evening start works best for either one, and they pair together naturally if you have a full day in the city.

The Rotunda is the oldest of Thessaloniki's great monuments, a massive round brick building with walls so thick they have survived more than seventeen hundred years of earthquakes. The emperor Galerius built it in the early fourth century, perhaps as a temple or perhaps as his own tomb, though he was buried elsewhere and its exact purpose has never been settled. By the fifth century it had become a church, decorated inside with some of the finest early Christian mosaics anywhere, and later it became a mosque. The slender minaret still standing beside it, rising here above the flowering trees, is the last one left in the city.

This aerial view shows the biggest and most beloved church in Thessaloniki, a long, tall basilica dedicated to Saint Demetrios, the city's patron, surrounded closely by apartment blocks of the modern town. Tradition says Demetrios was a young Christian of the city, imprisoned in the Roman baths on this spot and killed there in the early fourth century. A church rose over the site in the fifth century and has been rebuilt more than once since, most recently after a fire in 1917 gutted it, reopening in the late 1940s. Inside, look for seventh-century mosaics near the altar, and steps down to a crypt holding the remains of the old Roman baths.

From the upper slopes of the city, Thessaloniki spreads out below in a long curve of white buildings and red roofs running down to the water, with cargo ships and tankers often anchored offshore waiting their turn at the port. The city has been a working harbor since its founding more than two thousand years ago, and under Ottoman rule it was one of the great trading cities of the eastern Mediterranean, its docks once kept busy largely by the city's Jewish workers. On a clear day the hills across the gulf run to the horizon, and the view gives you a sense of how the modern city, the Roman forum and the Byzantine churches all sit within a short walk of each other.

Thessaloniki's modern waterfront runs along the water in a long line of apartment and office blocks, with the seafront promenade at their feet filling every evening with the volta, the slow stroll up and down the water that is the city's favorite habit. This stretch of shore used to be lined by sea walls, pulled down in the second half of the nineteenth century to open the city to the water, and the buildings behind it were rebuilt again after the fire of 1917. Walking it end to end is the easiest way to feel the shift from the old port and its warehouses to the newest gardens and lawns further along the coast.

Aristotelous Square is the grandest open space in Thessaloniki, a long lawn running from the sea up toward the old town, framed on both sides by matching curved buildings with arcades at street level. It looks as though it has always been here, but it exists because of a disaster. A fire in August 1917 burned through the historic center, leaving around seventy thousand people homeless, and the government chose not to rebuild the old maze of lanes but to plan an entirely new city, with this square as its grand axis. At the top of the lawn stands a statue of Aristotle, born nearby, whose foot people still rub for luck on their way through.
