$7.99Головне в містіA Cappadocia audio walk through Ürgüp takes you from a restored cave quarter past a vine mansion and rock-cut wine cellars to the view from Wish Hill, finishing in the old square where the town still gathers for tea.
The walk starts in Kayakapı, a hillside quarter honeycombed with doorways and chambers cut straight into the soft volcanic rock, long one of Ürgüp's working neighborhoods before it emptied and was later restored. From there you drop down to Asmalı Konak, a grand carved stone mansion built by a prosperous Ottoman-era family and made famous nationwide by the television drama filmed here in the early 2000s.
In the middle of the route you pass the Turasan Winery, where wine still ages in cellars cut deep into the rock, a trick that keeps a steady cool temperature the way it has for centuries on this volcanic plateau. From there the walk continues to the Ürgüp Hamam, the town's historic Turkish bathhouse, where neighbors have gathered to wash and warm up through the cold Cappadocian winters for generations.
The last stretch climbs to Temenni Hill, known as Wish Hill, with a small Seljuk-era tomb at the top and a view over the whole of Ürgüp and the valleys beyond. The walk ends down at the Tahsin Ağa Library on the main square, where tea houses and shops selling local wine and dried fruit keep the square busy into the evening. In total it covers 2.6 kilometers, about 36 minutes of walking, with one short, steep climb up to the hill.

Just outside town the valley floor is crowded with fairy chimneys, tall cones of pale volcanic rock left standing after softer ash eroded away around them. The rock is tuff, formed when ancient eruptions from Mount Erciyes to the east blanketed the region in thick layers of ash that hardened into something soft enough to carve with hand tools but firm enough to hold a roof. People here worked out long ago that a room cut into this rock stays cool in the fierce summer sun and holds its warmth through the bitter winter, which is why homes, churches and storerooms have been carved into formations like these for well over a thousand years. Walking among them, with small trees and vineyards growing in the gaps, gives a much better sense of scale than any photograph.

Before sunrise, dozens of hot air balloons lift off from the valleys around Ürgüp and drift low over the fairy chimneys and vineyards as the sky turns from pink to blue. The balloons follow the wind rather than a fixed route, so no two mornings look quite the same, and from a high point in town you can watch them rise in loose clusters over the eroded rock below. It is one of the defining sights of this part of Cappadocia, and locals who grew up here still stop to watch when the morning light is good. If you are out and about at first light, it is worth finding an open view to the west before the balloons start coming down again.

Kayakapı, whose name means rock gate, is one of Ürgüp's oldest neighborhoods, a slope of the town honeycombed with doorways, windows and whole rooms cut straight into the rock, many of them fronted by stone-built facades. It was a living quarter with houses, workshops and its own mosque until people moved out to newer homes through the twentieth century, and the old lanes slowly crumbled and emptied. In recent decades it has been carefully restored, much of it now serving as a hotel built directly into the cliff, and walking its narrow stepped lanes gives a close look at terraces, carved facades and doorways that climb the hillside in layers. The houses are private homes and guest rooms, so the view from the lane is the respectful way to take it in.

From the top of Temenni Hill, known locally as Wish Hill, the whole of Ürgüp spreads out below in stone houses stacked on the slope, their rock faces pocked with old caves, with the valleys of Cappadocia rolling away beyond the rooftops in folds of cream, gold and rose. People climb up here to make a wish, which gives the hill its name, and a small tomb from the Seljuk period sits at the summit, a reminder that this region passed between Byzantines, Seljuks and later Ottoman rulers over the centuries. On a clear day you can sometimes pick out the snowy cone of Mount Erciyes on the horizon, the volcano whose ash built the soft rock that the whole town is carved from and built on.
