The Tainan Anping Harbor Walk starts at the Eternal Golden Castle, a Qing fortress finished in 1876, follows the waterfront past a sixteen meter statue of the sea goddess Mazu at Lin Mo-niang Park, and crosses the canal into the old town at Yanping Street, lined with snack stalls and door plaques of Anping's sword lion symbol. From there the route visits Fort Zeelandia, the Dutch stronghold where Taiwan's written history begins, the banyan root tangled Anping Tree House, and finishes at the small Qing era Anping Small Fort, about 4 kilometers and 56 minutes.
The Tainan Old Capital Walk starts at the quiet Fahua Temple, once a Ming loyalist's garden, visits the shrine of Koxinga and the surviving Great South Gate with its rare barbican, and reaches the Tainan Confucius Temple, the island's first Confucian school, founded in 1665. Heading north past the 1930s Hayashi Department Store, the route arrives at Chihkan Tower, built over the ruins of the Dutch Fort Provintia, and finishes among the lantern lit shophouses of Shennong Street, also about 4 kilometers and 57 minutes.
Both walks are flat and easy underfoot, but Tainan's sun is strong for much of the year, so plan around the heat rather than the distance, starting early or timing your finish for the cooler, lantern lit evening. Snack stalls and convenience stores are rarely far away on either route, which is exactly how a Tainan walk is meant to be done, with frequent stops to eat.

Yanping Street is often called the first street in Taiwan, a lively lane of snack stalls and old shophouses said to date back to the Dutch period, when a market street grew up just outside Fort Zeelandia's walls. Today it's the place to graze on shrimp crackers, candied fruit and bean curd desserts, but look up above the doorways in the surrounding lanes too, for Anping's symbol: the sword lion, a lion's face with a sword clamped crosswise in its teeth, said to come from shields Koxinga's soldiers hung on their walls after returning home. These guardian plaques are found here more than anywhere else in Taiwan, each meant to ward off bad luck, and a small terrace nearby is devoted entirely to their stories.

The Eternal Golden Castle is a square Qing fortress of earth ramparts faced in brick, finished in 1876 with French engineering and British Armstrong cannons after an 1874 Japanese expedition alarmed the imperial court. Many of its bricks were carried over from the ruins of the older Dutch fort across town, and replica cannons still point out from its bastions toward the sea. A smaller, more modest battery, the Anping Small Fort, guards the walk's far end, built some thirty years earlier in the traditional Chinese style with thick walls and a few cannon openings. Standing at one and then the other, you can feel how fast coastal defense changed in just a few decades, from small brick batteries to a Western designed fortress.

Beside Fort Zeelandia stands Kaitai Tianhou Temple, said to be the oldest Mazu temple on the main island of Taiwan, founded in 1668 and still a working place of worship with lanterns, carved dragons and a steady stream of worshippers most days. Tradition holds that its statue of Mazu sailed over with Koxinga's own fleet in 1661, and it is one of the rare jointed statues whose arms and legs can actually move. Mazu, the protector of everyone who goes to sea, is honored across Taiwan, but a temple with this pedigree draws visitors lighting incense beneath its painted eaves from morning to night. It's a short stop, but a vivid one after the forts, full of color, smoke and sound.

Tainan Confucius Temple was founded in 1665 as the island's first center of Confucian learning, and for two centuries young men studied in its halls for the civil service examinations that led to office in imperial China. Unlike most Taiwanese temples it holds no statues, only spirit tablets and plaques presented by emperors and later presidents, kept beneath swallowtail roof ridges and old banyan trees. Every September 28, Confucius's birthday and Teachers' Day, a dawn ceremony fills the courtyard with ancient music and rows of costumed dancers performing a slow, formal routine passed down for centuries. The rest of the year the grounds are simply a calm, scholarly park where locals sit and read in the shade.
