Best Places and Surfaces for Dog Walks
Can dogs run on concrete? Does pavement wear their nails down? What each surface does to paws and joints, and the lead rules in parks and farmland.

The easiest way to meet other dog owners is to walk at the same time on the same route most days, because the people you'll get to know are the ones you see again and again. Let the dog start the conversation, learn the dog's name first and the owner's second, and keep your phone in your pocket so you look like someone who'd say hello back. If you'd rather meet several owners at once, look for a group dog walk, or start one. The good ones don't throw the dogs together: everyone walks in the same direction with space between the dogs, and they only get closer once they're relaxed. Research backs up the idea that dogs bring people together, so here's what it found, how group walks work, and where to look for one near you.
A 2015 study in PLOS ONE asked 2,692 randomly chosen adults in Perth, San Diego, Nashville and Portland about their pets and their neighbours. In every city, about half of pet owners said they'd got to know people in their neighbourhood through their pet, and across the whole sample dog owners were five times more likely to say so than owners of other pets. The walk itself seemed to matter: dog owners who walked their dog had about three times the odds of getting to know people this way compared with dog owners who didn't. Roughly a quarter of the pet owners who'd met people like this counted at least one of them as a friend, and around 40% of all the pet owners had received some kind of support, practical or emotional, from someone they met through their pet. It's a phone survey taken at one moment, so it can't prove the dog caused the friendships, and the authors say so. But it fits what most owners notice: a dog gives two strangers something easy to talk about, and a daily walk gives them the chance to do it.
One hello rarely turns into anything. The tenth one, with the same person and the same dog by the same bench, often does. That's why routine beats effort here. If you walk at roughly the same time each day and keep to a similar loop, you'll start passing the same people, and the conversation grows a little each time: first a nod, then the dog's name, then how old it is, then where you both live. Most owners are happy to talk about their dog, so a question about it is the easiest opener there is, and "what's her name?" works better than a comment on the weather. Pay attention to the owners who walk at your pace and seem to enjoy a chat, and when it feels natural, suggest walking the next loop together. That's how a nodding acquaintance becomes someone you text when you're heading out.

Meeting another owner doesn't mean your dogs have to meet. The Kennel Club's Canine Code is clear that you shouldn't let your dog approach dogs that are on a lead and under control, because you can't assume the other owner wants that, and that dogs should only play off lead together if every owner has agreed and can call their dog back. It also makes a point many owners miss: "It is not necessary for he or she to play with other dogs when out for a walk." So ask before any greeting, and if the answer is no, talk anyway, with both dogs at your sides. Some of the best dog walking friendships start between two people whose dogs ignore each other completely.
A well-run group walk looks less like a dog park and more like a slow procession. The dogs walk in the same direction, a few metres apart, each with its owner, and they get closer only once everyone is calm. Dogs Trust gives this method for introducing a new dog to the one you already have, and it suits a group walk just as well: walk each dog separately at a distance from the other, keep each dog's attention on its own walker, then slowly come closer after they've had time to explore. When both dogs are relaxed, let them say hello and sniff, then keep moving. Dogs Trust lists the early signs that a dog is uncomfortable as walking away from the other dog, turning its face away or licking its lips, and the serious ones as barking, lunging or snapping. If you see those, separate the dogs and give them more space, and if it keeps happening, talk to a qualified trainer. If your own dog struggles around other dogs, a big group walk isn't the place to work on it.
A few dogs should sit a group walk out. The professional dog walkers' guidelines produced with Dogs Trust and the RSPCA say that dogs showing signs of an infectious illness, such as kennel cough, shouldn't be walked or socialised with other dogs, and that a female in season should be walked alone in quiet areas unless the owners have agreed otherwise. They also expect walkers to check that dogs in a group are vaccinated, wormed and treated for fleas, which is a fair question to ask before anyone's dog joins a regular walk.
Group dog walks are usually small and local, so they're easier to find through people than through search results. Training classes are a good start, because you'll meet owners who live nearby and care about how their dogs behave, week after week, which is exactly the repetition that turns faces into friends. Breed clubs, rescue charities and the owners you already nod to at the park are the next places to ask. Local community groups online often have dog walking threads too. When you find a group, look at how it's run before you go: a small group, a set meeting point in a public place, a route with wide paths and a host who says the dogs keep their distance at first are all good signs. A free-for-all where every dog is let off at once is a different kind of outing.

If there's nothing near you, starting one is simpler than it sounds. You don't need a club, just a time, a place and a few owners who like the idea. My suggestions for a first walk:
If you'd like to find other owners without waiting for them to turn up at your park, Walk With Me can help. It's a dog walking app where dog-friendly walks show as pink markers on the map, so you can ask to join one near you, or create your own with a route, a meeting note and a participant limit, and approve who comes. It's free on the App Store and Google Play.

Train each dog alone first, give each one a side, and use two matching leads. When a coupler helps, when it doesn't, and when to walk them separately.
