Local favorites that make an easy first meetup.

You meet at the first chapel above the Prima Cappella bus stop, where the old pilgrim road begins. The cobbled path climbs steadily past fourteen chapels to the village of Santa Maria del Monte, about two kilometers up with wide views over the lakes on clear days. Count on an hour up at a talking pace, and the same path back down. Sunday afternoons are busy with local families, while weekday mornings are silent. At the top, the village bars serve coffee on terraces with a view that makes the climb feel cheap.

You meet at the Schiranna lakefront, by the lido entrance a short bus ride from central Varese. A flat gravel path rings the entire lake, and the friendliest group option is an out-and-back toward Gavirate of five or six kilometers, with the Alps floating on the horizon the whole way. You share the route with cyclists, so keep the group to one side in a chatty column. Summer evenings and Sunday mornings are the popular hours. The lakeside cafe at Schiranna handles coffee and cold drinks when you return.

You meet at the gates of the Estensi gardens behind the town hall of Varese. The formal terraces, fountain and gravel avenues climb to the lawns of Villa Mirabello, whose small summit gives a view over the rooftops to the mountains, all inside two easy kilometers. Paths are smooth and the short climbs are gentle, so any fitness level manages comfortably. Lunchtime brings office workers to the benches, and the late afternoon light is the prettiest. The cafes of Corso Matteotti, the pedestrian spine of the old town, start just outside the gates.

You meet on the lakefront promenade in Gavirate, by the little pier where the path leaves town. Boardwalk sections and crushed-gravel stretches follow the reed beds toward the old monastery at Voltorre, a flat out-and-back of around three kilometers with herons for company. The Milano to Laveno railway stops in Gavirate, which keeps the meetup car-free. Weekend mornings see rowers training offshore, while weekday evenings are almost empty. Afterward, order the town's famous brutti e buoni biscuits with your espresso in a pasticceria near the station.

You meet on the ferry pier piazza in Laveno, where the boats from Verbania dock and the trains from Varese terminate. The promenade along Lake Maggiore is flat and open, about two kilometers of shoreline with steep green mountains rising straight from the water. Anyone craving a climb can ride the bucket cable car up Sasso del Ferro and rejoin the group for the finish. Summer weekends and ferry arrivals bring waves of visitors, while spring and autumn mornings are serene. Gelato and coffee line the waterfront within sight of the pier.

The walking community in Province of Varese is the people around Province of Varese who use Walk With Me to walk together. You see their walks on the map, ask to join one, or post your own and let them find you.
A community like this doesn't need a club or a fixed Tuesday night. It works more like a noticeboard: someone posts a walk for Sunday morning, a few people nearby ask to join, and the host lets them in. Some walks turn into a weekly habit for the people on them, and others happen once, which is fine too.
This page exists because enough people who walk with the app live close together around Province of Varese. A city gets a page once at least four people with public profiles, each within about 10 km of another, have used the app there in the last three months. The figures at the top come straight from the app and are rounded down to a range, so they never claim more walkers than there are.
Small communities move at the pace of whoever posts first. If the walks listed above are few or far off, a walk you create is the quickest way to change that. Start one live and walkers within about 10 km get a notification unless they've turned those alerts off, or plan one for later and it sits on the map for anyone looking ahead.
Walk With Me is free on iPhone and Android: the map, joining walks, creating your own and the friends list cost nothing. Add the people you enjoy walking with as friends, and next time you can filter the map to show just their walks. Your steps count on group walks too, so walking with them also moves you up the step rankings.
