Mystery Destination

A compass points to a hidden real place nearby. No pin, just the direction and the distance. Walk until it gets hot.

How you play Mystery Destination

Three hidden places, one compass and 24 hours. Each place is revealed when you get there.

Start a mystery

Open Mystery from the games menu and tap Start a mystery. There's nothing to set up. The app picks three real places around you, each 400 to 900 metres from the last: a landmark, a park, a garden, a square, a café or a bakery. If you aren't on a walk, a private one starts for you.

Follow the compass

The Mystery tab shows a compass pointing at the first spot, how far away it is and how warm you are: Far, Getting closer, Warm, Hot and Almost there. The dial changes colour as you close in, and your phone gives a little tick each time you get warmer.

Solve all three

Each spot pays 30 XP, and finding all three adds 60 more, so a full mystery is worth 150 XP. A solved mystery sometimes drops a free Premium day too, and your walk report lists every place you found.

Rules and fair play

Mystery Destination only works if the destination stays a mystery, so the app keeps it that way.

  • The place's name and location never reach your phone until you find it, so there's nothing to peek at.
  • A spot counts only on a live walk, when your GPS puts you within about 50 metres of it. At Almost there, an I'm here button works within about 60 metres.
  • The spots go in order, and jumps faster than anyone can walk are rejected.
  • Every spot is a real place of an approved kind, never a playground or a dog park, and you're never sent to a spot you suggested yourself.
  • One mystery at a time, and each one ends 24 hours after it starts. End it early and you keep the XP you've earned.
  • On the free plan a mystery uses one of your six weekly game starts, shared across all the games. Premium has no limit. The free Premium day can drop at most once a day and three times a month.

I really like the idea. Seems like I'm the first walker in my city, but the concept is exactly what I wanted.

What is a Mystery Destination?

A compass walking game: the app hides a real place near you and shows only its direction and distance, and the place is revealed when you walk there.

A walk with no destination is relaxing. A walk with a secret destination is something else. You stop following your usual route and start reading the streets: is it this way, or is it the park behind those houses? Mystery Destination gives you just enough to go on, a direction and a distance, and leaves the route to you.

It works best somewhere you think you already know. The spots are real places a short walk apart, so you end up at a café you've never tried, a square you always cut past or a garden you didn't know was there. A full mystery is usually somewhere between one and three kilometres.
