How many miles is 10,000 steps? It depends on your height. Enter your steps and your height to get your own distance in miles.
Based on a step length of 72 cm, estimated as 41.4% of your height. Your real step length changes with pace and terrain, so treat this as a close estimate rather than a measurement.
Example: 10,000 steps at a height of 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) is about 4.37 miles, or 7.04 km.
Every step covers a distance called your step length, and steps times step length is the distance you walked. The only hard part is the step length, which varies from person to person, mostly with height.
The usual estimate puts walking step length at about 41.4% of your height. For someone who is 5 feet 7 inches tall, that is about 27.7 inches, which works out at roughly 2,290 steps to the mile. A taller walker takes fewer steps per mile and a shorter one takes more.
Your real step length also changes with pace: a brisk walk lengthens your stride and a stroll shortens it. So the result is a close estimate. If you want it exact, measure your own step length by counting your steps over a known distance.
miles = steps x (height in inches x 0.414) / 63,360
For someone of average height, around 5 feet 7 inches, 10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles. Shorter walkers land closer to 4 miles and taller walkers closer to 5.
It takes around 75 minutes at a brisk pace, or closer to an hour and a half at an easy one. Most people never walk 10,000 steps in one go, though. Spread across an ordinary day, a good part of it comes from getting around the house, work and the shops.

Find a distance you know. A lap of a running track is 400 metres, about a quarter of a mile, or you can measure a straight stretch with a tape or a map. Walk it at your normal pace and count your steps.
Divide the distance by the number of steps. On a 400 metre track, 560 steps means a step length of about 71 cm, or 28 inches. Do it twice and average the two. With your own step length, your phone's step count becomes a far more accurate distance.
Most phones and watches start from the same height-based estimate, and some then correct it with GPS on outdoor walks. GPS is usually more accurate outside, but it can drift between tall buildings, and indoors it has nothing to go on.
If your app lets you enter your height or step length, do it. It is the single biggest improvement you can make to the distance it reports.
