What to expect on a Vienna audio walking tour
Vienna's two audio walks give you the city from two different angles: the grand imperial ring lined with palaces and coffeehouses, and a slower loop through museums, markets, and gardens. The Imperial Ring walk starts you off outside the Vienna State Opera and works up Kärntner Strasse before the spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral comes into view. From there you'll thread through Graben and Kohlmarkt, two of the city's grandest shopping streets, before arriving at Hofburg Palace, the sprawling former seat of the Habsburgs, and Heldenplatz, where the narration fills you in on the square's more complicated history.
If you'd rather spend your time among museums and gardens, the second walk sets off at Maria-Theresien-Platz and into the MuseumsQuartier, then loops past Karlskirche and the stalls of Naschmarkt before climbing into Belvedere Gardens. You'll finish near Upper Belvedere with the city's rooftops spread out below you, a nice reward after all that walking.

Graben and St. Stephen's Cathedral
This is the beating heart of Vienna's Innere Stadt, a wide pedestrian street lined with grand facades, jewelers, and cafe terraces that opens right onto the soaring gothic spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral. You will hear street musicians, smell fresh coffee drifting out of century old cafes, and see horse drawn carriages clopping past on their way to the Hofburg. It is polished and elegant without feeling stuffy, and it makes a perfect starting point for wandering deeper into the old town. Come at dusk when the lampposts flicker on and the cathedral is lit up gold.
Ringstrasse Boulevard
The Ringstrasse loops around the old city in a grand circle, and walking even a stretch of it feels like flipping through a picture book of 19th century architecture. You will pass the Opera House, City Hall, Parliament, and the twin museum buildings, all set behind manicured lawns and chestnut trees. It is a wide, shaded, easy walk with plenty of benches and tram stops if your legs get tired. Locals jog and cycle here in the mornings, and the whole boulevard glows during the Christmas markets.
Belvedere Gardens
The formal gardens between the Upper and Lower Belvedere palaces are one of the most photogenic spots in the city, with terraced hedges, fountains, and sphinx statues framing a view straight back to the Vienna skyline. You will want to walk slowly here, since every terrace reveals a slightly different angle on the palace and the city beyond it. It is a favorite spot for picnics and quiet strolls among locals who know it as more than just a museum stop. In spring the flower beds burst into color and the whole place feels like a painting come to life.
Naschmarkt
Vienna's most famous market stretches for nearly a kilometer, packed with stalls selling spices, cheese, olives, fresh produce, and steaming plates of street food from a dozen different countries. Walking through it is a full sensory experience, with vendors calling out, the smell of grilled kebabs mixing with fresh bread, and colorful displays at every turn. On Saturdays a flea market extends the stalls even further, perfect for browsing antiques and vintage finds. It is a lively, unpretentious counterpoint to the grandeur of the Ringstrasse just a few blocks away.
Stadtpark
This leafy city park along the Wien River is where Viennese locals go to unwind, with winding paths, ponds full of ducks, and the gilded statue of Johann Strauss tucked among the flower beds. Walking here feels unhurried, with joggers, dog walkers, and couples on benches sharing the shade of old trees. The Art Nouveau park pavilions add a touch of elegance you will not find in an ordinary green space. It is an easy, restful walk right in the middle of the city, just steps from the Ringstrasse.
