Ljubljana Walking Tour: A Self-Guided Loop Through the Old Town

Ljubljana is small enough to cross in an afternoon and pretty enough that you will want to take all day. This route loops through the old town along the green river, climbs up to the castle for the view, and comes back down through the squares to finish in the heart of the city. It is a natural fit for self-guided walking tours, because the whole thing curls back on itself and nothing is more than a few minutes from the next stop. Expect a little over three kilometers, with one proper climb in the middle.

Before you set off

Set aside about two hours at a wander, plus whatever time you spend at the castle up top. The one real effort is the walk up to the castle, so save some energy for it, or take the funicular if the hill is not for you today. Café tables line the riverbanks, so plan to stop at least once and watch the water go by, which is half the point of being here. Comfortable shoes matter for the castle path, and a light jacket is handy since the old town streets stay shaded and cool. Ljubljana is a green, easygoing capital, more town than metropolis, and the walk reflects that: nobody is in a hurry here, and you should not be either. The old town is almost entirely closed to cars, so you can wander down the middle of the lanes without watching for traffic. Whenever you cross the river, stop on the bridge for a moment, because the willow lined banks look different from every span, and half the charm of the city is the water running through the middle of it.

Dragon Bridge

Start at the Dragon Bridge, where four green dragons crouch on their pedestals watching the traffic. The dragon is the symbol of the city, and these are the ones everyone comes to photograph, so it makes a strong opening. Get close to one and look at the detail in the scales and the curled tongue, then step back to see the pair framing the river behind them. From the bridge you get your first proper look at the Ljubljanica, the slow green river that the whole old town is built around. Notice how the buildings come right down to the water, with cafes and willow trees leaning over the edge. There is a local legend that the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses the bridge, a story every guide tells with a grin, so watch closely and make of it what you will. The bridge was one of the first of its kind built from reinforced concrete when it went up, though you would never guess it from the ornate lamps and the fierce green beasts. Once you have your fill of the dragons, walk along the near bank a short way to the covered market that runs beside the water.

Central Market

Ljubljana dragon bridge The central market sits along the river in a long curved colonnade, an elegant stretch of stone arches that doubles as a riverside walk. On market mornings the open stalls out front are piled with fruit, flowers, and local cheese, and even when they are packed away the colonnade itself is worth the stroll. Walk the length of it and look through the arches at the water on one side and the market on the other. There are steps down to the river here where locals sit with a coffee, one of the nicest quiet corners in the city. This whole stretch was designed by the architect who shaped so much of Ljubljana, and once you learn to spot his style you start seeing it everywhere. From the market, look up: the castle sits on the wooded hill right above you, and that is where you head next.

Ljubljana Castle

Climb the hill to the castle, either on foot up one of the leafy paths or by the funicular that runs from near the market. The walk up takes maybe fifteen minutes and the paths are shaded the whole way, so it is pleasant even on a warm day. The castle itself is a mix of old walls and modern additions, but the reason to come up is the view. Climb the outlook tower and the whole city opens beneath you, red roofs ringed by green hills, with the Alps on the horizon on a clear day. Walk the courtyard, look into the small exhibits if you like, and give yourself a while on the ramparts. This is the high point of the walk in every sense. There has been a fortress on this hill for a thousand years, though what stands now is a patchwork of many centuries, and the small museum inside tells that story if you want the detail. In summer the courtyard often hosts concerts and open air films, so it is worth glancing at what is on. Sit on the ramparts for a while and pick out the stops you have already walked, laid out below like a map. When you are ready, head back down the hill toward the river, aiming for the bank opposite where you started.

Cobblers' Bridge

Ljubljana castle view city

The Cobblers' Bridge is a wide, low bridge lined with stone pillars, more of a small square hung over the water than a simple crossing. It takes its name from the shoemakers who once had their stalls here, back when bridges doubled as marketplaces.

Congress Square

Congress Square is a broad open green ringed by grand pale buildings, a change of scale after the tight riverside lanes.
