What to expect on a Lisbon audio walking tour
Lisbon's two narrated walks stay close together but feel worlds apart, one climbing through Alfama's hillside lanes to the castle, the other tracing the flat, elegant streets of Baixa and Chiado.
The Alfama walk starts at Lisbon Cathedral and immediately starts climbing, taking you up to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia for your first big view over the rooftops and the river. From there the route continues through Portas do Sol and up to Sao Jorge Castle, before winding back down through the tight Alfama Lanes, the oldest and most tangled part of the city.
The second tour trades hills for grand squares, starting at Praca do Comercio right on the water and passing under the Rua Augusta Arch into the Baixa grid. You'll pass the Santa Justa Lift on your way to Rossio Square, then climb gently into Chiado's shopping streets before the walk finishes up in Bairro Alto near the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara.
Both tours sit around 2.8 to 2.9 kilometers, so either one makes for a comfortable morning or afternoon, and they connect well if you want to do both in the same day. Alfama
Lisbon's oldest neighborhood tumbles down the hillside in a tangle of narrow lanes, tiled facades, and hidden staircases that beg to be explored. You'll hear fado music drifting from open windows and pass laundry strung between balconies as you climb toward Sao Jorge Castle. Miradouros along the way, like Santa Luzia, offer postcard views over terracotta rooftops to the Tagus River. It's the most atmospheric, soulful part of the city to wander without a map.
Praca do Comercio
This grand riverside square opens right onto the Tagus, framed by yellow arcaded buildings and the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch. You'll find cafes with tables facing the water, street musicians, and a steady stream of ferries crossing in the distance. Walking through the arch leads straight into the bustling Baixa district. It's a spacious, elegant place to start or end a day of exploring downtown Lisbon.
Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara
Perched at the edge of the Bairro Alto district, this garden terrace looks out across the rooftops toward Sao Jorge Castle and the river beyond. Locals gather here in the evening with drinks from the nearby kiosk, and the shaded benches make it an easy spot to linger. Below the viewpoint, tiled walls and manicured hedges add a formal touch to the panorama. It's one of the best sunset spots in the city.
Chiado and Bairro Alto
By day, Chiado charms with elegant bookshops, historic cafes, and grand theater facades along its sloping streets. By night, the neighboring Bairro Alto transforms into a maze of bars and tascas spilling music onto the cobblestones. You'll pass the striking ruins of Carmo Convent, its roofless gothic arches open to the sky. Together the two districts capture both the refined and the lively sides of Lisbon.
Santa Justa Lift and Rossio Square
This ornate iron elevator rises high above the Baixa rooftops, its viewing platform giving you a close up look at the castle and the hills of the city. Down at street level, Rossio Square bustles with wave patterned mosaic pavement, fountains, and grand neoclassical buildings. Cafes here have served locals for over a century. It's a fun mix of engineering marvel and classic Lisbon street life.
