The Old Montreal Walk is a gentler outing, 3.2 kilometers and about 44 minutes through Place d'Armes and past the Notre-Dame Basilica, then along Rue Saint-Paul to Place Jacques-Cartier. It wraps up near the Old Port of Montreal, past Bonsecours Market, so you get the colonial architecture without the uphill climb.

Mount Royal Park
Designed by the same landscape architect behind Central Park, Mount Royal offers winding forest paths that climb gradually from the city up to sweeping views of the skyline. You'll pass the Mount Royal Chalet and eventually reach the Kondiaronk Belvedere, where the whole city spreads out below you between the river and downtown towers. Along the way there's a mix of shaded woodland trails and open lawns, popular with joggers, cyclists, and picnicking locals. It's a proper hike within city limits, but the reward at the top makes every step worth it.
Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal)
Cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and centuries of history make Old Montreal feel like a different city entirely, with horse drawn carriages clattering past outdoor cafes near Place Jacques-Cartier. You'll wander past the twin spires of Notre-Dame Basilica and the domed Bonsecours Market before ending up at the Old Port, where the St. Lawrence River opens up alongside walking and cycling paths. Street performers and artists often fill the squares in warmer months, adding to the old world charm. It's a walk that rewards getting a little lost in the side streets.
Rue Sherbrooke and the Golden Square Mile
This grand avenue cuts past McGill University's leafy campus and some of the most opulent mansions built by Montreal's industrial elite in the nineteenth century. You'll pass museums, upscale galleries, and ivy covered stone facades as the street rises gently toward the base of Mount Royal. It's a polished, tree lined walk that shows off a very different side of the city from the cobblestones of Old Montreal. Give it a slow half hour, there's a lot of architecture worth pausing for.
Lachine Canal
This former industrial waterway has been reborn as one of Montreal's favorite linear parks, with a paved path running along the water past converted lofts, cyclists, and the occasional heron fishing near the banks. You'll pass old locks and swing bridges that hint at the canal's shipping history, now surrounded by green space and picnic spots. It's flat, shaded in places, and a favorite for both walkers and cyclists heading out from downtown. A stretch of an hour or so gives you a real feel for the canal's quiet, reclaimed charm.
Plateau Mont-Royal and Avenue du Mont-Royal
The Plateau is where Montreal's creative, colorful side really shows itself, with rows of brightly painted triplexes and their signature winding outdoor staircases lining nearly every block. You'll pass indie boutiques, cafes, and murals along Avenue du Mont-Royal, with a laid back, artsy crowd filling the sidewalk terraces in summer. It's one of the most photogenic residential neighborhoods in North America, full of character at every turn. Wander without a plan here, the staircases and street art make every block worth a second look.
