Bruges Walking Tour: A Self-Guided Route Through the Old Town

Bruges looks like it was drawn for a storybook. A whole medieval town of stepped brick gables, quiet canals, and cobbled squares survived almost intact, and wandering it feels like walking into another century. This route takes you from the grand central square through the town's oldest corner, along its prettiest canal, and down to the peaceful gardens at its southern edge. It is an easy delight among self-guided walking tours, under two kilometers and flat the whole way, with a view worth stopping for at nearly every turn. Belfries, canals, swans, and lace.

Before you set off

Plan for around two hours at a gentle pace, more if you climb the belfry or stop for waffles and chocolate, both of which are practically mandatory here. The route is short and flat, all cobbles, so comfortable shoes matter more than stamina. Bruges is famously changeable with the weather, grey and atmospheric one hour and bright the next, so bring a layer and do not let a little drizzle put you off, since the town is beautiful in any light. Early morning and early evening are the magic hours, when the day trippers thin out and the canals go still and mirror smooth. Take it slowly, because rushing Bruges rather misses the point. Most visitors arrive by train for the day and cluster around the Markt and the main canal, which means the moment you step two streets away the town empties out and turns quiet and dreamlike, so build a few of those detours into the walk. And do stop for the local specialties as you go: the waffles, the frites, the chocolate in every window, and the beer, all of which the town does exceptionally well and none of which you should feel guilty about.

The Markt

Start in the Markt, the great central square of Bruges, ringed with tall, colorful stepped gable houses and dominated by the towering belfry on its southern side. This has been the commercial heart of the town for a thousand years, and it still bustles with cafe terraces, horse drawn carriages, and market stalls. The belfry is the symbol of the city, and if you have the energy for its long, narrow, winding staircase, the view from the top over the red roofs is unforgettable. Stand in the middle of the square and turn a slow circle to take in the gables, each one a little different. This is the natural starting point and the place everything else radiates from. When you are ready, leave by the short street on the eastern side, which opens almost at once into a second, grander square.

Burg Square

Bruges Markt belfry square A few steps from the Markt lies Burg Square, smaller but even richer, packed with centuries of architecture crowded shoulder to shoulder. Here stands the ornate gothic city hall, its front covered in statues and gilding, one of the oldest in the region. Beside it, easy to miss, is the modest doorway of the Basilica of the Holy Blood, which holds a famous relic and hides a jewel box of a chapel up a stone staircase. This square was the political and religious core of the old town, and the sheer density of carved stone around you tells you how important it was. Stand back and let your eye travel across the different facades, each from a different age. Then leave by the small passage in the corner, which leads you down toward the water.

The Fish Market

Through the passage you come to the Fish Market, a quiet stone colonnade where fishmongers have laid out their catch on the cold slabs for two hundred years. Even when the stalls are packed away, the columned arcade is a handsome, peaceful spot, tucked right beside the canal. This is the moment the walk meets the water for the first time, and the mood shifts from grand squares to intimate waterside. Look through the columns at the canal beyond and the little bridge crossing it. The lanes around here are some of the prettiest and least crowded in the town. Take a slow look around the arcade, then step out to the canal side and walk the few paces to the most famous view in Bruges.
