Manchester is the great city of the industrial age reborn as a hub of music, football and northern spirit, a place of soaring Victorian architecture, redbrick warehouses and a fierce local pride. If you are planning a walking tour in the United Kingdom beyond the capital, this Manchester self guided walking tour explores the compact and handsome city centre, from its grand civic square and spectacular town hall through two of the most beautiful libraries in Britain to the medieval cathedral and the buzzing streets around it. It is a walk through the confidence of a city that powered the world and reinvented itself, packed with grand stone, hidden history and modern energy.
Before you set off, a few practical notes. This walk covers about four kilometers and takes around two hours at an easy pace, flat throughout on paved city streets. Wear comfortable shoes and, this being Manchester, bring a coat, because the city has a well-earned reputation for rain that can arrive at any moment. Any time of day suits this route, though the civic buildings look magnificent floodlit in the evening. If you are following along by audio, keep your eyes up on the grand architecture, watch for the trams that glide through the centre on their tracks, mind the traffic driving on the left, and pause whenever a square or a building invites you to slow down.
You begin in St Peter's Square, a broad civic space at the heart of the city where gleaming trams glide across on their tracks and grand buildings frame the open plaza. Stand in the middle and take it in, the curved white stone of the great library on one side, the tram lines crossing the square, and a tall war memorial in the form of an obelisk and cenotaph honoring the city's fallen. This square has long been the symbolic centre of Manchester, the scene of celebrations, remembrance and protest, on ground where a famous fight for democracy and workers' rights once played out. The modern trams give it a busy, connected feel. Take in the sweep of the square and its monuments. Then step toward the striking circular building on its southern side, one of the most beautiful public libraries in the country, its columned facade curving like a Roman temple.
Manchester Central Library is a magnificent circular building modeled on the great domed temples of ancient Rome, its facade a sweep of tall columns beneath a broad dome, one of the grandest public libraries in Britain. Walk up to the columned portico and step inside if it is open, into a soaring domed reading room where light falls from high windows onto readers hunched over books beneath the great circular ceiling, an atmosphere of hushed grandeur. The building was raised in the confident years between the wars as a gift of knowledge to the people of the city, and it remains a beloved and welcoming place. Its curved stone exterior is a favorite backdrop for photographs. Take in the columns and, if you can, the great domed hall within. Then walk the short distance to the adjacent building, an enormous Gothic pile of soot-darkened stone and soaring towers that is the pride of the city.
Manchester Town Hall is one of the finest Victorian Gothic buildings in the world, a vast and dramatic pile of pointed arches, carved stone and a towering central clock tower, built to proclaim the wealth and ambition of the industrial city at its height. Walk around its great bulk and crane your neck at the soaring clock tower and the ranks of statues and gargoyles clinging to the walls. Within are spectacular painted halls celebrating the city's history, and the building has stood in for the grandest settings in countless films. Its blackened Gothic grandeur is deeply atmospheric, a cathedral of civic pride. Take in the towers and the intricate stonework. Then step around to the front of the building, which faces onto a handsome square that serves as the city's traditional gathering place for celebration and festivity.
